Vermont Ski Resorts for Families: Choosing Your Base

Pick the right town for your family's ski trip and the whole week gets easier.

Killington and Rutland: The Practical Pairing

Killington has the longest season in the East and terrain that splits cleanly by ability. Families with mixed-age kids tend to base in Rutland, a 25-minute drive west on Route 4, where room rates drop noticeably compared with slope-side lodges. Rutland also has the grocery stores, laundromats and walk-in clinics that a week with children eventually requires. If you want to ski first tracks without a car in the morning, pay for a condo at Sunrise or Pico and accept that dinner out means driving.

Book Rutland for a five-night stay if your group includes anyone under eight or any non-skier, because the town absorbs a bad-weather day better than a resort village does. The Vermont Farmers Food Center and the Paramount Theatre on Center Street give you somewhere to go when the lifts close for wind. Drive times: Rutland to Killington base, 25 minutes; to Pico, 15. Best months are January through early March; February school break is the busiest and most expensive window.

Stowe and the Northern Valleys

Stowe pairs a real village on Main Street with a resort base on Mountain Road, and the two are eight miles apart. Families who want to park once and walk to breakfast should book in the village near the Stowe Community Church and take the free Mountain Road shuttle. The resort side suits people who value ski-in access over restaurant choice, though even there you will want a car for the eight-mile run into town.

For a quieter northern base, look at Morrisville, 20 minutes north on Route 100, where lodging costs less and the drive to the Mansfield gondola is straightforward. Waterbury, 30 minutes south on Interstate 89, works for families splitting a trip between Stowe and Sugarbush and puts the Cabot annex and the Ben & Jerry's factory tour within a short drive. Snowmaking at Stowe is excellent, so a December trip is realistic here even in a thin year.

The Southern Tier: Stratton, Bromley and Manchester

Stratton and Bromley sit about 25 minutes apart in the south, which makes Manchester the smartest single base for a family that wants variety without repacking the car. Manchester's outlets, the Northshire Bookstore and the restaurants along Main Street give non-skiers a full day. Stratton's base village is purpose-built and easy with young children, but nightly rates there run highest of the three; Bromley is smaller, sunnier and often better value for beginners.

Book Manchester if you are driving up from Hartford or New York and want a shorter last leg; it sits roughly three and a half hours from the New York line via Route 7. Chester, about 40 minutes north on Route 11, is a smaller alternative with inns rather than condos, though the tradeoff is that you drive to every lift.

Sugarbush, Mad River Glen and the Route 100 Corridor

Waitsfield and Warren anchor the Mad River Valley and offer the closest thing to a classic Vermont ski week. Sugarbush's Lincoln Peak handles families well, Mad River Glen is a deliberate throwback with limited snowmaking and a single chair, and the two are 15 minutes apart on Route 17. Stay in Waitsfield for the widest choice of lodging and the best breakfast spots, and plan on a car for everything.

Skip Mad River Glen with beginner children on a low-snow week, since its terrain and snowmaking are less forgiving than Sugarbush's. If your family wants one resort and no decisions, book Killington and stay close; if you want a town, book Manchester or Stowe village and treat the mountain as a day trip. Reserve lodging by October for February dates, and January midweek offers the best combination of snow, quiet lifts and lower rates.
