Woerden with Kids: Family-Friendly Things to See and Do
A compact, car-free day out in Utrecht province, with moat walks, a windmill you can climb and a castle ruin the children can explore.
Start at the old moat and the Kasteel van Woerden
Woerden sits on the Oude Rijn between Utrecht and Leiden, roughly twenty minutes by direct train from Utrecht Centraal and about forty minutes by car via the A12. The town's shape does much of the work for you: the centre is a near-circle ringed by the remains of its medieval moat. Begin at the Kasteel van Woerden, a ruined castle on the north-west edge of that ring. Entry is free and the site is small enough that young children can wander it without a plan. The grass around the walls is good for a picnic, and the water is fenced, which matters with toddlers.

The Petrijnsgracht walk and the mill
From the castle ruin, follow the Petrijnsgracht round the moat — a loop under two kilometres, flat, and pram-friendly the whole way. Parents with children old enough to cycle will find the paths easy going; the town is small enough to give them a little freedom. About halfway you reach the stellingmolen De Windhond, a working tower mill on the edge of the centre. Check opening times before you go, because volunteer-run mills open on limited days, often Wednesday and Saturday afternoons. When it is open, the steep ladder stairs to the gallery are the real draw for children of about six and up.

Markets, the church and where to eat
Saturday is the best day to visit, and not only for the mill. The weekly market fills the Kerkplein and the streets around the Petruskerk, whose tower is the tallest thing in town and a useful landmark if anyone gets separated. Stopping for lunch is straightforward: the terraces on the Kerkplein and along the Voorstraat are priced for a Dutch provincial town rather than a city, and most places will do a small portion of pancakes or soup for a child. Avoid the chain places near the station and eat in the centre instead — the difference in quality is noticeable and the price is similar.

Beyond the centre and back to Utrecht
For a longer afternoon, cycle or drive the Rijn & Venen route towards Kamerik, a landscape of peat meadows, narrow drainage channels and windmills that is classic Groene Hart. Combine the walk round the town moat with this ride and you have a full day without needing an attraction with a ticket desk. Families wanting more to fill the day can add a short side trip to Oudewater, around twenty minutes by car, where the Heksenwaag is a curiosity older children tend to remember.

Practicalities and where to stay
Woerden works best as a half-day to full-day stop folded into a longer Utrecht stay. The town has its own hotels, but for a family trip the better value is usually a hotel in Utrecht city, twenty minutes away by train, which puts the Dom tower, the Railway Museum and the Centraal Museum within walking distance of your room. Book a place near Utrecht Centraal for a short break; the train from Woerden runs into the station directly, so you avoid parking charges in Woerden's edge-of-centre car parks, which are paid and busy on market days.

Questions, answered
How do you get to Woerden from Utrecht without a car?
Direct trains run from Utrecht Centraal to Woerden in roughly twenty minutes and are frequent through the day. The station sits a short walk from the old centre. A bicycle is useful for the wider peat-meadow routes but not needed for the town itself.
Is Woerden good for a rainy day?
Partly. The castle ruin and moat walk are outdoor activities, and the market is uncovered. On wet days, treat Woerden as a short stop and spend the bulk of the day at indoor museums in Utrecht city instead, where there is more to occupy children.
What is the best month to visit Woerden with children?
Late spring to early autumn, roughly May to September, gives you the best chance of dry weather for the moat walk and the Rijn & Venen cycle route. Check the mill's opening days before travelling, as they are limited throughout the year.
