Buziaș or Făget? A Practical Guide to Day Trips from Timișoara

Both towns are within an hour of Timișoara, but they offer very different days out. Here's how to pick.

Buziaș: Mineral Springs and a Leafy Park

Buziaș sits 35 kilometres east of Timișoara, a 40-minute drive on DN6 or a direct train from Timișoara Nord that takes about 50 minutes. The town's identity is built on its mineral springs; the park at the centre, laid out in the 19th century, is a quiet grid of lime trees, gravel paths and faded villas. You come here for a slow walk, a coffee on a terrace and the sense of a Habsburg spa town that time has half-forgotten. It is not a place for adrenaline.

The main draw is the park itself, free to enter and pleasant for an hour or two. The mineral water is available from pumps in the park; locals fill bottles. There is a small museum in the town, but opening hours are limited, so check locally. A handful of guesthouses and small hotels operate in and around Buziaș, mostly along the main street and near the park. In summer, the outdoor pool complex opens, but it is modest compared to what you would find in Timișoara. Best months are May, June and September; July and August can feel empty when the spa season dips.

Făget: Hills, Orchards and a Rustic Pace

Făget is 70 kilometres east of Timișoara, a 1-hour-15-minute drive on DN6 through Lugoj, or a slower train journey on the same line. The town sits at the foot of the Poiana Ruscă hills, and the surrounding countryside is a patchwork of orchards, hay meadows and beech woods. It is a working agricultural town, not a resort, but the setting is genuinely pretty, especially in spring when the fruit trees blossom. The town has a small central square, a couple of churches and a market on weekends.

What brings visitors is the walking. There are no marked trails in English, but the forestry tracks behind the town climb into the hills and offer views back over the Timiș plain. The Făget forest is also known for its summer mushroom picking, a local tradition. Accommodation is limited to a few simple guesthouses; do not expect spa facilities. The best time to visit is April to June, when the countryside is at its greenest, or October for the autumn colours. Winter can be bleak and foggy, and many rural guesthouses close.

Which One Should You Book?

If you have half a day and want minimal fuss, choose Buziaș. The train is direct, the park is compact and you can be back in Timișoara for dinner. It suits travellers without a car, families with young children and anyone who prefers a gentle wander over a hike. Book a hotel in Timișoara rather than staying in Buziaș itself; the town's accommodation is limited and you will have far more choice in the city, from the Iosefin and Cetate neighbourhoods to the modern hotels near Piața Victoriei. Timișoara also gives you easy evening options.

Făget rewards those with a car and a whole day. The drive through Lugoj is part of the experience, and the hill walks are the main event. If you are based in Timișoara, plan to leave by 9am and return by early evening. There is little reason to stay overnight in Făget unless you are specifically exploring the hills. For both trips, a Timișoara hotel makes more sense: the city has the restaurants, transport links and room inventory. Given the current search patterns on our site, most travellers are booking city hotels and treating Buziaș and Făget as add-ons.

Questions, answered

Can I visit Buziaș without a car?

Yes. Trains from Timișoara Nord run several times a day and take about 50 minutes. The park is a short walk from the station. Check the return schedule before you go, as afternoon services can be sparse.

Is Făget worth a full day?

Only if you enjoy walking in quiet countryside. The town itself has limited sights. With a car, you can combine Făget with a stop in Lugoj, but public transport makes the trip long and the walks harder to reach.

Where should I stay for these day trips?

Timișoara is the practical base. It has the widest range of hotels, frequent transport and evening dining. Buziaș has a few guesthouses, but Făget's accommodation is very basic. Book a city hotel and travel out.
