Alcázar Views from Zamarramala and San Marcos: Where to Stand
Two hills, two very different looks at Segovia's fairy-tale fortress — and how to pick the right one for your trip.
Zamarramala: The Village View
Zamarramala sits on a hill about 3 km northeast of the Alcázar, a short drive or a steady 40-minute walk from the aqueduct. From the church square and the mirador beside it, you get a clean, elevated look at the fortress's east face, with the cathedral tower behind and the Guadarrama mountains on clear days. The view is best in the late afternoon, when the sun lights the stone. There is no entrance fee; just respect the residents and keep noise down.
To get there, take the SG-V-6122 road or walk up past the Iglesia de la Vera Cruz. If you are driving, parking is limited near the square, so arrive before 11am or after 5pm. The walk from the aqueduct takes about 40 minutes uphill; a taxi from the Plaza Mayor costs around €6–8. I would book this view if you want a quiet, local setting and a sense of the fortress in its landscape rather than in isolation.
San Marcos: The Riverside Angle
San Marcos is a former monastery turned hotel on the north bank of the Eresma, about 1.5 km from the Alcázar. The view from its terrace and the adjacent meadow looks up at the fortress's north side, framed by the river and the poplar trees. It is a lower, closer angle than Zamarramala, and the fortress feels more imposing. You can walk there from the aqueduct in 20 minutes via the Calle de San Marcos; by car, take the C-605 and park near the church of San Marcos.
The terrace is open to non-guests if you buy a drink, but it is a hotel first, so avoid peak dinner hours. The best months are May, June, September and October, when the light is soft and the riverside path is dry. I would book a room here if you want the view on your doorstep and do not mind being outside the old town. Otherwise, come for a drink and walk back along the Eresma.
Which View to Choose
If you have one clear evening, go to Zamarramala for the wide, postcard shot. If you want to combine the view with a meal or a stay, San Marcos is the practical choice. The two are not far apart: a taxi between them takes 10 minutes and costs under €10. Do not try to do both at sunset; pick one. I would book Zamarramala for photography and San Marcos for a relaxed drink with the fortress above you.
Skip the crowded viewpoint at the aqueduct if you want the Alcázar alone; it is busy from 10am to 6pm. Also skip driving to Zamarramala on Sunday afternoons in summer, when local traffic makes parking difficult. For a hotel, stay inside the old town near the Plaza Mayor, where you can walk to the aqueduct and catch a taxi to either viewpoint. The partner's site lists several small hotels in that area.
Questions, answered
Is Zamarramala within walking distance of Segovia's old town?
Yes, it is about 3 km from the aqueduct, a 40-minute uphill walk. The path is steady but paved. Most people take a taxi (€6–8) or drive. Buses are infrequent, so check times at the tourist office.
Can non-guests visit the San Marcos terrace?
Usually yes, if you buy a drink or coffee. It is a hotel, so avoid busy meal times. The terrace is open daily, but hours vary by season. The walk from the old town takes 20 minutes along the Eresma river.
When is the best time to photograph the Alcázar from these spots?
Late afternoon in spring or autumn gives warm light on the stone. Summer evenings are also good but busier. Winter afternoons are quiet but the sun sets early. Check sunset time and arrive 30 minutes before.
