Where to Stay in Santa Catarina: Neighbourhoods, Real Prices and How to Choose

From Florianópolis' lagoon-side villages to Balneário Camboriú's vertical skyline, here's where to book in Brazil's southern playground.

Florianópolis: Lagoa da Conceição, Campeche and Centro

Florianópolis splits into three lodging worlds. In Lagoa da Conceição, pousadas cluster along Rua das Rendeiras and the lagoon's western shore, five minutes from Praia Mole and Joaquina. Expect R$250–450 per night for a double in high season (December–February), dropping to R$140–250 in May and August. The Aeroporto Hercílio Luz (FLN) is 18 km south, a 30–40 minute drive depending on the SC-401. The laguna's nightlife strip along Avenida das Rendeiras has bars and seafood restaurants within walking distance of most inns.

Campeche, 12 km further south, trades buzz for space: wide beach, Saturday organic market, and pousadas from R$180–350 in summer. Centro and the Agronômica waterfront suit travellers without a car — the terminal rodoviário is here, and the UFSC campus keeps year-round demand. If you want walkable restaurants and quick access to both coasts, I'd book Lagoa over Centro. Skip the cramped rooms near the rodoviária unless you arrive after midnight and leave by morning.

Balneário Camboriú and Itajaí: high-rises and cruise docks

Balneário Camboriú is Brazil's Dubai-on-the-sea: 80-storey towers along Avenida Atlântica, a cable car (Barra Sul to Unipraias) over the beach, and hotel rates that spike hard in January. A sea-view double at a mid-range tower runs R$400–700 in peak weeks, R$200–350 in April and October. The city sits 80 km north of Florianópolis via the BR-101, roughly 60–90 minutes by car. Without a car you're fine — most of the seafront is walkable, and Uber covers the 5 km between Barra Sul and the central beach.

Itajaí, 12 km north, is the working port city: cheaper rooms (R$150–280), the Museu Histórico and a compact centre, but few beaches of its own. Book Balneário if you want the postcard; book Itajaí if you're cruising from the port or watching the Volvo Ocean Race stopover. Skip Balneário in the first week of January unless you reserve months ahead — prices double and traffic on the Avenida Atlântica crawls.

North Coast: Joinville, São Francisco do Sul and the BR-101 corridor

The north is greener and quieter. Joinville, Santa Catarina's largest city, has business hotels around R$180–320 and a famous dance festival in July; it's 180 km from Florianópolis, about two hours on the BR-101. São Francisco do Sul, 45 km east of Joinville, is one of Brazil's oldest towns — colonial centre, Praia da Enseada, and pousadas at R$160–300. The ferry from São Francisco to the mainland runs frequently and costs little.

Further north, Barra do Sul and Itapoá offer emptier beaches and rental houses rather than hotels. If you're driving between Curitiba and Florianópolis, a night in Joinville breaks the trip well. I would not base a whole beach holiday in Joinville — the coast is 40 minutes east. Skip the roadside motels along the BR-101 unless you're purely transiting; they're cheap but noisy and far from anything.

Serra Catarinense and West: Urubici, Lages and Chapecó

Inland, the Serra Catarinense delivers cold-weather escapes. Urubici, 170 km from Florianópolis via the SC-430, has mountain lodges and pousadas from R$200–400, with fireplaces and views of the Serra do Rio do Rastro. Winter (June–August) is peak; nights drop below zero and the region occasionally sees snow. Lages, 65 km west of Urubici, is a larger town with hotels at R$150–280 and a central praça worth an evening.

Chapecó, in the far west, is 550 km from the capital — mostly business travel, with hotels around R$160–300. Unless you're visiting family or on business, I'd skip Chapecó and put the time into the Serra instead. Book Urubici lodges directly by phone in July; many are small and fill weeks ahead. The drive from Florianópolis to Urubici takes 2.5–3 hours, and the last stretch has winding climbs.
