Santa Catarina in One Day: What You Can Actually See, and What to Cut

Florianópolis rewards a single day only if you pick one coast — here is the honest version, with drive times, price bands and the months that work.

Why Florianópolis Is the Only Realistic Base

Santa Catarina stretches 600 km from the Paraná border to Rio Grande do Sul, and a day trip from Chapecó to Florianópolis is a seven-hour drive. If you have one day, sleep on the Ilha de Santa Catarina. The island's centre, the Centro, and the Lagoa da Conceição neighbourhood are the two sensible bases: Centro puts you near the Mercado Público, the terminal rodoviário and the airport bus, while Lagoa sits between the lagoon and the eastern beaches. Neither is close to the other.

From Hercílio Luz International Airport, the 12 km to Centro takes 25 to 40 minutes by app car and costs roughly R$60 to R$90; the Lagoa is 18 km and around R$90 to R$130. Local buses (the TICEN and TILAG terminals) do both for under R$8 but double the time. Arrive September to November or March to May: 24-28°C, thinner crowds, and hotel rates at their lowest.

The One-Day Route That Actually Works

Pick the east coast and stay there. Start at Barra da Lagoa by 8am — the walk from the village to the Pontal da Barra channel takes 20 minutes, and the natural pools at the channel mouth are best at low tide (check the tide table the night before; it decides your morning). Continue south along Rua das Rendeiras past Lagoa da Conceição, then Campeche, where the sand is wide and the water colder than it looks. Two beaches, one morning, no backtracking.

A prato feito with fish runs R$35 to R$60; grilled tainha or camarão na moranga at a sit-down restaurant runs R$70 to R$130 per person, and portions serve two. Skip the island's famous oyster bars on a one-day trip unless you want to spend R$150+ and two hours at Ribeirão da Ilha, 25 km and 40 minutes from Lagoa. It is excellent and it will eat your afternoon.

Afternoon: North or South, Not Both

After lunch, choose. North: Jurerê Internacional, 30 km and 45 minutes from Lagoa, calm water, beach clubs with minimum spends around R$100 to R$200 per person in high season. It is polished, expensive and not particularly Brazilian-feeling. South: Praia do Matadeiro or Praia da Armação, 25 km and 40 minutes, fishing-boats, low-key bars, sunset over the headland — my pick for a first trip, and cheaper by half.

If you have no car, stay east: Lagoa to Barra da Lagoa is 6 km and a R$25 to R$35 app ride, or a 30-minute walk along the lagoon. Public buses on the island are frequent on the Lagoa-Campeche-Barra axis and sparse after dark. Either way, be back in Centro or Lagoa by 7pm and eat dinner there — the island's roads get genuinely slow between 6pm and 8pm in summer.

Where to Sleep, and What to Skip

Book in Lagoa da Conceição if your day is beaches: hostels R$80 to R$150 per bed in low season, pousadas R$250 to R$450 a double, and the walk to restaurants is short. Book Centro if you are using it as a transport hub or leaving early: business hotels run R$200 to R$380, and the Mercado Público area has the best evening food for the money. In January and February, rates on the island can double and traffic on the SC-401 turns 20 minutes into 60.

Skip Balneário Camboriú on a one-day Santa Catarina trip, and skip the Serra Catarinense entirely — Urubici is 130 km and about three hours from Florianópolis on the SC-282, with the Morro da Igreja road often closed outside winter. It deserves two nights, ideally June to August for frost and the waterfall ice. Trying to bolt it onto a beach day means you do neither. One coast, one day, one hotel booked in advance.

No. Urubici is 130 km and roughly three hours each way on the SC-282, and the Morro da Igreja access road closes at times. You would spend six hours driving. Give the Serra its own two-night trip between June and August.
