October Half-Term in Reading: Family Plans and Where to Stay

School-holiday ideas that actually work with children in tow, from a riverside museum morning to a Thames-side walk, plus the neighbourhoods where a family hotel stay makes most sense.

Where to stay, and what I would book

Three areas suit families. The town centre around Station Road and Friar Street puts you five minutes from the museum, the Oracle and the trains; expect mid-range chain hotels and higher weekend rates during half-term. Caversham, across the river, is quieter, has a village feel around Church Street and Prospect Street, and is a 20-minute walk or short bus ride into town. The third option is the business belt along the A33 towards Thames Valley Park, where rooms are larger and parking is usually free, but evenings are dead and you will drive everywhere.

For a two-night half-term break with children, I would book a town-centre hotel with a family room and breakfast included, then use trains and walking for the whole stay — the convenience beats the saving on a suburban rate once you factor in parking and taxi fares. Book three to four weeks ahead; October half-term is one of the year's busier weeks in the Thames Valley. Ask specifically for a room away from Friar Street on Friday and Saturday nights, when the bars get lively. If you need two separate rooms, Caversham guesthouses often work out better value than a city-centre family suite.

Questions, answered

Is Reading good for a family half-term break without a car?

Yes. The station, museums, Oracle and riverside paths are all within a 20-minute walk, and trains reach Oxford, Newbury and London quickly. Choose a town-centre hotel near Station Road or Friar Street and you will rarely need a bus.

Which is better for families, Caversham or the town centre?

Caversham is quieter, with a village high street and riverside meadows, but adds a 20-minute walk into town. The centre is more convenient for museums, trains and restaurants. With young children and a short stay, I would take the centre.

What should we book in advance for October half-term?

Book your hotel three to four weeks ahead, reserve Hexagon theatre family shows as soon as listings appear, and pre-book National Trust parking at Basildon Park if visiting. Library holiday sessions usually need sign-up and fill quickly.
