Where to Stay Around Murree: Mall Road, Bhurban, Patriata or Nathia Gali
Murree is the closest hill escape to Islamabad, but where you sleep shapes the whole trip. Compare the main bases in Murree and the Galiyat, from the busy Mall Road to the quiet pine forests of Nathia Gali.
Murree and the Galiyat at a glance
Murree sits at around 2,300 metres in the hills northeast of Islamabad, roughly 60 kilometres by road. On a clear weekday morning the Murree Expressway gets you there in about an hour and a half, but weekend and snowfall traffic can stretch that much longer. Beyond Murree, a chain of smaller hill stations known as the Galiyat continues north towards Abbottabad, with Nathia Gali as its best-known resort.
Each base in this area has a different personality. Choosing the right one matters more than choosing the right room, so start with the kind of trip you want.
Mall Road, Murree: for first-timers and families
Mall Road is the heart of Murree, a long pedestrian promenade lined with shops, snack stalls and viewpoints. Staying within walking distance means you can stroll out in the evening, eat without driving, and leave the car parked for the whole stay. That convenience makes it the classic choice for first visits and family weekends.
The trade-off is noise and crowds. On summer weekends, public holidays and snowfall days, the centre becomes very busy and parking is difficult. Ask your hotel whether it has its own parking, and if quiet nights matter, choose a property a little away from the main bazaar.
Bhurban and Patriata: quieter bases nearby
Bhurban lies about 9 kilometres from Murree, on a forested ridge with wide views towards the Kashmir hills. It is calmer than Mall Road, with a resort feel and a well-known golf course, and it suits couples and families who want space and a slower pace while staying close enough to visit Murree town.
Patriata, sometimes called New Murree, is around 15 kilometres from Mall Road and is known for its chairlift and cable car rides over pine-covered slopes. Staying on this side is useful if those rides are the main reason for your trip, or if you want to avoid the town centre altogether.
Nathia Gali: forests, walks and cooler air
Nathia Gali sits higher than Murree, at around 2,400 metres, and lies roughly 32 kilometres beyond it in Abbottabad District of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. It is greener, cooler and much quieter, with old pine, oak and walnut forests and a small bazaar rather than a long shopping street.
This is the base for walkers. The trail up Miranjani, one of the highest points in the Galiyat, starts nearby, and the Mukshpuri walk from Dunga Gali is another favourite. Nearby Ayubia and the pipeline track also make easy family walks. Choose Nathia Gali if you want fresh air and nature more than shopping and crowds.
Season, snow and practical tips
Summer is the main season, when families from the plains head up to escape the heat. Winter brings snow and a second rush of visitors who come to see it, and that is when the roads need the most care. Check the weather and official traffic advisories before you drive up on snowfall days, travel in daylight, carry warm clothes and some food and water, and follow police instructions if roads are closed.
When booking, ask how rooms are heated and whether the hotel has backup power, since cold evenings and power cuts are common in the hills. Confirm parking, especially in Murree town, and check whether family rooms are available. Weekdays are calmer and easier on every count, so if your dates are flexible, travel midweek.
Which base should you choose
Pick Mall Road for a first visit, short family breaks and easy evenings on foot. Pick Bhurban or Patriata for a calmer stay with views and easy access to the chairlifts. Pick Nathia Gali for forests, walking trails and cooler, quieter days.
If you have three or four days, you can combine two bases: a night or two near Murree for the classic sights, then continue north to Nathia Gali for the forests before returning to Islamabad by way of Abbottabad or back through Murree.
