Best Things to Do in Murree, Ranked for a First Visit

A practical ranking of Murree's high points, from the Mall Road stroll to the Kashmir Point ridge, with drive times, price bands and what to skip.

1. The Mall Road and Ridge Walk

Start on the Mall Road, the spine of Murree's old hill station, running from the General Post Office near Kashmir Point down through the bazaar to Jhika Gali. It is a pedestrian-friendly stretch of colonial-era buildings, pony rides and dhabas, and the whole walk takes about 40 minutes at an easy pace. Mornings before 10am are quietest; by noon in June and July it is shoulder to shoulder. Tea and pakoras at a roadside dhaba typically cost PKR 300 to 800 for two, and there is no entry fee anywhere along the route.

The real reward is the ridge itself. Walk north from the bazaar towards Kashmir Point and the ground drops away on both sides, with deodar and pine slopes and, on a clear day, a long view towards the Pir Panjal range. Sunset here is the town's best free show, roughly 6:30pm in summer and 5pm in December. Bring a light jacket even in July, because the ridge wind is cold. This is the one thing I would not skip, and it needs no booking.

2. Kashmir Point and the Governor's House

Kashmir Point sits at the northern end of the Mall, about 2km from the bazaar and a 15-minute walk or short taxi ride. The viewpoint looks over the Jhelum valley towards Azad Kashmir, and the Governor's House, a colonial building with terraced gardens, is nearby. Entry to the gardens is usually free and opening hours are daylight only; expect crowds on weekends and public holidays. The walk there is gradual and paved, so it suits families with children and older travellers better than a hike would.

From Kashmir Point you can continue on the road towards Ghora Gali, about 12km and 30 minutes by car, where the Lawrence College grounds and pine forest make a calmer stop. Drivers will quote PKR 2,000 to 4,000 for a half-day round trip depending on the vehicle and negotiation. If you only have one afternoon in Murree, pair the Mall with Kashmir Point and leave Ghora Gali for a second day. It is the better use of limited time.

3. Patriata Chairlift and the Forests Below

Patriata, also called New Murree, is about 16km southeast and 45 minutes by road on a narrow, winding climb. The chairlift and cable car run in two stages up to roughly 2,200 metres, and tickets are usually in the PKR 1,000 to 2,500 range per adult for the full ride, sold on site. Queues build fast on weekends and holidays, so arrive at opening. The upper station has a viewing platform and simple cafés. Cloud can close in without warning, which cancels rides and refunds are handled at the counter.

The forest around Patriata is the best short walk in the area, with marked paths through fir and pine that take an hour or two. Wear shoes with grip; the tracks turn muddy after rain, and the monsoon months of July and August bring both mud and leeches. Spring, from March to May, and autumn, September to November, are the most reliable months for clear views and dry paths. I would book Patriata as a half-day and keep the rest of the day free, because the road back is slow.

4. Where to Base Yourself

Murree accommodation clusters in three areas. The Mall and Jhika Gali are walkable to everything, with guesthouses and older hotels from roughly PKR 6,000 to 15,000 a night in peak season, and more on Eid holidays. Bhurban, 9km and 20 minutes down the road, has larger resort properties and quieter surroundings but you will need a car for everything. Sunny Bank and Gharial are cheaper, with rooms often under PKR 6,000, though the walk uphill to the Mall is steep and not lit well at night.

For a first trip I would book in Bhurban if travelling with family and wanting space and parking, and in Jhika Gali if the goal is to walk the Mall and the ridge without a car. Book ahead for June to August, when Islamabad and Lahore weekenders fill the town, and avoid arriving on a Friday evening. Coming from Islamabad takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours by road via the Murree Expressway; from Lahore it is 4.5 to 5 hours. Skip the pony rides at the bazaar unless you have checked the animal's condition yourself.

Questions, answered

How many days do you need in Murree?

Two full days covers the Mall, Kashmir Point and Patriata comfortably. Three days allows a slower pace and a stop at Ghora Gali or Bhurban. Most visitors come for a weekend from Islamabad, which is enough for the ridge and one side trip.

When is the best time to visit Murree?

March to May and September to November bring clear views and dry walking paths. June to August is cooler than the plains but crowded and wet. December to February brings snow and cold nights, with some roads and chairlifts closed, so check conditions before travelling.

Do you need a car in Murree?

For the Mall and Kashmir Point, no, since both are walkable from Jhika Gali and central guesthouses. Patriata and Ghora Gali need a car or hired taxi. If you stay in Bhurban, plan on having your own vehicle for everything, including meals and sightseeing.
