Ingleton is the closest town to the viaduct for drivers: 12 miles via the A65 and Blea Moor Road, about 25 minutes. It has more beds than either Settle or Hawes, with guesthouses around £85–£140, plus a handful of places in Chapel-le-Dale itself for walkers doing Ingleborough. Spring here means daffodils in the churchyard and the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail reopening fully after winter.

The Yorkshire Three Peaks challenge runs on the last weekend of April and bookings spike hard, so avoid that date unless you are taking part. For a straightforward viaduct visit I would rank bases: Settle first for train access, Ingleton second for driving and choice, Hawes third unless you specifically want Wensleydale. Skip staying at Ribblehead itself; the one inn fills months ahead and there is nothing else within walking distance.

When to go and what to skip

Late March to mid-May is the sweet spot. The viaduct is at around 300 metres, so snow can linger into April and the wind on the battlement walk is ferocious even on a sunny day. Bluebell and curlew season peaks in May, and the days are long enough for a 7pm walk up to the arches. Avoid bank holiday weekends if you can; accommodation in Settle, Hawes and Ingleton roughly doubles and roads near Horton in Ribblesdale clog by 10am.

Skip the idea of a day trip from Leeds, York or Manchester. Leeds is 60 miles and about 1 hour 40 minutes; Manchester is 70 miles and often two hours via the M65. You will spend the best light in the car. Two nights minimum, based in Settle or Ingleton, gives you one clear morning at the viaduct, one day on the fells and a spare window for the train. Booking directly with a dales guesthouse beats waiting for a last-minute deal in spring.
