The Yorkshire Coast in October: Where to Stay and What to Expect

Quieter promenades, seal pups below the cliffs at Ravenscar and short drive times between Whitby and Filey make October the most practical month to book a coastal stay in North Yorkshire.

Where to base yourself: four coast towns compared

October on the Yorkshire coast is a month of two halves. Early October often holds daytime temperatures in the low teens with sea fog burning off by mid-morning, while the last week can bring sharp north-easterlies off the North Sea and squally showers that pass in twenty minutes. Daylight drops from roughly 7am to 6.30pm at the start of the month to 7.30am to 4.30pm by the end, so plan coastal walks before 3pm. Sea temperatures sit around 13C, which is fine for a paddle in Scarborough's North Bay but not for swimming without a wetsuit. Rain is frequent but rarely all-day; a waterproof layer matters more than an umbrella.

Scarborough is the practical choice for families: two sandy bays, the castle headland between them, Peasholm Park and the open-air theatre, plus a railway station with direct trains to York in under an hour. The South Bay seafront hotels are convenient but can be noisy; the quieter streets sit behind the Esplanade or in the Old Town around St Mary's. Filey, fifteen minutes south, is smaller and flatter, with a long promenade and the rocky Brigg extending into the sea at low tide. Bridlington, further down, is the busiest for day-trippers and the least restful overnight.

Distances are short. Whitby to Robin Hood's Bay is 6 miles by road, roughly fifteen minutes; Whitby to Scarborough is 21 miles, about 35 minutes; Scarborough to Filey is 10 miles, twenty minutes. The Esk Valley line links Whitby with Grosmont and Pickering for the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. If you are driving, note that the A171 across the moors can be slow behind farm traffic and closes quickly in high winds. Park at the top of Robin Hood's Bay and walk down; the village lanes are not built for cars and the car park at the bottom fills early.

What I would skip: the amusement arcades and promenade cafes that close early from mid-October, and the larger seafront hotels in Scarborough's South Bay if you want quiet. Do not attempt the cliff path at Bempton in strong wind, and do not rely on the little tourist road train or beach huts being open late in the month. Do book a harbour-view room in Whitby if you can, or a Filey guesthouse two streets back from the front, where October rates are noticeably kinder and the walk to the beach is still five minutes.

Frequently asked questions

Questions, answered

Is October a good time to visit the Yorkshire coast?

Yes. Crowds thin after the first week, room rates fall, and the seal colony at Ravenscar and Bempton is at its best. Expect mixed weather, shorter daylight and some seasonal businesses closing, particularly after the half-term holiday at the end of the month.

Do I need a car for a coastal break in October?

It helps for Bempton, Ravenscar and Robin Hood's Bay, where bus services thin in autumn. Whitby and Scarborough are both reachable by train from York and Middlesbrough, and Whitby, Scarborough and Filey are linked by the Yorkshire Coastliner bus route.

When should I book a hotel for October half-term?

Book the school half-term week several weeks ahead, as Whitby and Filey guesthouses fill quickly for that period. Outside that week, midweek nights are usually available at short notice, and asking directly about parking and breakfast often settles the choice between similar listings.
