Cheap Places to Stay Near Ribblehead Viaduct: Budget Hotels and Pubs in the Yorkshire Dales (2026)
Where to sleep for under £100 a night within striking distance of the Ribblehead Viaduct, from bunkhouses in Hawes to pub rooms in Ingleton.
The villages within reach of the viaduct
Ribblehead sits at the head of Ribblesdale, around 4 miles south of Hawes, 8 miles north of Ingleton and 14 miles west of Settle. The station car park is free and the walk to the viaduct's 24 arches takes about 15 minutes. Almost nobody stays at Ribblehead itself — the Station Inn is the only option on the doorstep. Most budget beds are in Hawes, Ingleton and Settle, with Horton-in-Ribblesdale offering the closest cheap camping and bunkhouse beds, 4 miles south.
Trains on the Settle–Carlisle line stop at Ribblehead roughly every two hours, so a car is useful but not essential. From Leeds the drive is around 1 hour 50 minutes via the A65; from Manchester it's 1 hour 40 minutes. If you're coming by rail, Hawes and Ingleton are awkward without a car — Horton-in-Ribblesdale and Settle are on the line and much easier. Best months for walking are May, June and September; July and August bring full car parks and higher room rates, and February closures are common.
Budget hotels and pub rooms, ranked by value
In Hawes, the Crown Inn and the White Hart both rent simple en-suite rooms above their bars, typically £70–£110 for a double in spring and autumn. Expect low ceilings, real ale downstairs and breakfast included at the Crown. In Ingleton, the Wheatsheaf and the Old Post Office guesthouse sit within a 10-minute walk of the Ingleton Waterfalls Trail car park, at roughly £65–£95. Settle has the Golden Lion and a handful of B&Bs on Duke Street and Kirkgate, often £75–£110, and it's the liveliest of the three for an evening out.
If you want to be nearest the viaduct, the Station Inn at Ribblehead is the obvious pick — a proper Dales pub with rooms and a campsite behind it. Horton-in-Ribblesdale has the Crown Hotel and the bunkhouse barns at Broadrake and Dub Cote, where dorm beds run about £20–£30 per person. For a group of four, a self-catering cottage in Hawes or Sedbergh at £90–£140 a night works out cheaper than four pub singles. I'd book the Station Inn for one night and Hawes for two — you get the viaduct at sunrise and a proper town to eat in.
What to skip, and how to keep the bill down
Skip the big country-house hotels around Skipton and Grassington if the viaduct is your priority — you'll pay £150-plus and add 45 minutes of driving each way. Also skip anything advertising itself as 'Ribblehead' that actually sits on the A65 near Ingleton; check the postcode, because LA6 and BD24 both get used loosely. The Tan Hill Inn is a fine pub but it's 30 miles north — a lovely drive, not a base. And don't bank on the Settle–Carlisle running in heavy snow; services are frequently replaced by buses in January and February.
Cheapest nights are Sunday to Thursday outside school holidays, when Dales pubs drop rates to fill rooms. Ask directly whether breakfast is included — at £10–£14 per head it changes the maths. Bunkhouses in Horton and Keld charge £18–£28 per person and almost always have space midweek. Book two to three weeks ahead for May and September weekends; the Three Peaks Challenge in late April fills every bed in Horton. Walking boots, a torch and cash for honesty boxes are worth packing, as several village shops close by 5pm.
