Expect a private room in the £70–£120 bracket depending on season and whether you want an en-suite. That is competitive with the Black Horse and the Foresters Arms, and cheaper than Grassington House. What you trade for the location is space and facilities: no lift, no gym, no reception desk staffed around the clock.

Who it suits and who it doesn't

If your trip is walking, pubs and early starts, book it. The Dales Way passes through the village, the Grassington to Kettlewell path along the river is one of the finest low-level walks in the national park, and you can be on Malham Moor or at Kilnsey Crag within a 20-minute drive or a half-hour bus ride. Pubs like the Black Horse serve food until around 9pm, and there are enough other guests and walkers around that solo evenings don't feel awkward.

From the square, Bolton Abbey is about 25 minutes by car, Malham Cove around 30, and Aysgarth Falls roughly 50 minutes. Without a car, the 72 bus connects you to Skipton, and from there you can reach Settle and the Settle–Carlisle line. A day trip to York is possible by train via Leeds in about two hours each way — doable but long, so I would save York for a separate stop and keep Grassington for the Dales themselves.

May, June and September are the sweet spot: dry-ish paths, long evenings and room rates below the August peak. Book direct where possible and ask about single-occupancy rates, which smaller Dales properties often have but don't advertise. Avoid the cheapest rooms if they face the square in summer.
