Paharganj or Aerocity: Where to Base Yourself on a First Delhi Trip

The two most-booked arrival districts in New Delhi suit very different travellers, and picking the wrong one can cost you hours in traffic or rupees in taxis.

Paharganj: The Backpacker Belt by New Delhi Station

Paharganj sits directly across from New Delhi Railway Station, with Main Bazaar running from the station forecourt toward Connaught Place. This is Delhi's original budget-traveller quarter: guesthouses above shops, travel agents, luggage stores and rooftop cafes. Expect basic rooms from around ₹800–1,500 a night, with a few upgraded properties charging ₹2,500–4,000. The location is unbeatable for early trains or the Airport Express from New Delhi station, and Connaught Place is a 15–20 minute walk via Chelmsford Road. The trade-off is constant noise, persistent touts and narrow lanes where cars barely fit.

You would book Paharganj if you arrive by train, want to spend under ₹2,000 a night, and plan to leave for Rajasthan or Amritsar within a day or two. It also works for solo travellers who value street food and a social hostel scene around Main Bazaar and the lanes off Ramdwara Road. What to skip: anyone expecting quiet nights, easy parking or a resort-style pool. The area is at its most chaotic from October to March, peak season, when room rates rise and the lanes are packed after dark.

Aerocity: The Airport Hotel Zone

Aerocity is a purpose-built hospitality district beside Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International Airport, about 4 km from the terminal and connected by a free shuttle and the Airport Express line to New Delhi station. It is a cluster of international-brand hotels, conference venues and restaurants with wide, clean sidewalks. Rates start around ₹6,000–8,000 for mid-range brands and climb past ₹15,000 at the top end. The Airport Express reaches New Delhi station in roughly 20 minutes, but a taxi to central sights such as India Gate or the Red Fort takes 45–70 minutes depending on traffic, costing ₹600–900.

You would book Aerocity for a layover, an early-morning departure, or a first night after a long flight when you want a quiet room and a proper shower. It also suits business travellers with meetings in Gurugram or at the airport, and families who prefer predictable facilities over atmosphere. What to skip: treating Aerocity as a sightseeing base. The area has no historic character, and you will spend both time and money reaching the sights. November to February brings Delhi's best weather but also its worst air quality; light rain in July and August can delay flights.

The Middle Ground: Karol Bagh and Connaught Place

Karol Bagh, a 10-minute metro ride from New Delhi station on the Blue Line, offers mid-range hotels from ₹2,500–5,000 with easier taxi access than Paharganj and a huge market along Ajmal Khan Road. Connaught Place, the colonnaded commercial heart, has heritage hotels and modern boutiques from ₹5,000–9,000, plus direct metro access to most major sights. Both are more comfortable than Paharganj for a first trip without the isolation of Aerocity. I would book Karol Bagh for a balanced first visit: you can walk to markets, take the metro to Old Delhi in 15 minutes and still find a quiet room.

Connaught Place is the better choice if you plan to visit India Gate, Jantar Mantar and the National Museum, all within 2–3 km, and want restaurants and shops on the doorstep. Skip both if your flight lands after midnight and you leave again the next morning; Aerocity wins on convenience for that pattern. For a three-night first trip, Karol Bagh or Connaught Place will give you the most useful base, with Paharganj as a budget fallback and Aerocity reserved for flight nights.

Questions, answered

How far is Paharganj from the airport?

About 16 km, typically 30–50 minutes by taxi depending on traffic. The Airport Express from New Delhi station takes roughly 20 minutes to Terminal 3, and Paharganj is a short walk or auto-rickshaw ride from the station.

Is Aerocity good for sightseeing in Delhi?

Not really. It is convenient for the airport but 15–20 km from central sights such as India Gate and the Red Fort. Expect 45–70 minutes by road each way. Use it for flight nights, not as a sightseeing base.

Which area is best for a first-time visitor on a moderate budget?

Karol Bagh or Connaught Place. Both offer mid-range hotels, metro access and easy reach to major sights without the noise of Paharganj or the distance of Aerocity. Paharganj suits tighter budgets; Aerocity suits brief airport stays.
