Old Delhi Metro Stations With Luggage: A Practical Guide

Which Old Delhi stations have lifts and escalators, where the crowds bite, and how to reach a hotel on foot without dragging a suitcase up a staircase.

Know your three stations before you book

Old Delhi is served by three stations on different lines, and they are not interchangeable with a suitcase. Chandni Chowk (Yellow Line) sits under Chandni Chowk road near the Red Fort end, with lifts down to the concourse and escalators at the main exits. Lal Qila (Violet Line) is the closest platform to the Fort's Lahore Gate and is comparatively quiet. New Delhi station on the Blue Line and Airport Express is the practical arrival point if you are coming from IGI Airport, but it is a 20-25 minute walk from the old-city hotels and involves crossing the Paharganj side.

Chandni Chowk is my default recommendation for a first Old Delhi stay. It is air-conditioned, staffed until late, and the lift takes you to street level within a five-minute walk of the main hotel cluster around Fatehpuri Masjid and Sitaram Bazar. Lal Qila is quieter but the surrounding lanes are darker at night. New Delhi station is busiest between 08:00 and 11:00 and again from 17:30; avoid wheeling bags through the Paharganj exit at those hours if you can time it otherwise.

Escalators, lifts and the reality of the exits

Delhi Metro rules require luggage to be screened at the entrance, and large suitcases go through the same X-ray as handbags. A 28-inch case fits, but you will lift it onto the belt yourself. All three stations have lifts, though at Chandni Chowk the lift is at one end of the platform and can be a 60-70 metre walk from where you alight. Escalators exist but are often set to run upward only during peak hours, which means carrying a heavy case down stairs when you leave. Pack so that you can lift your own bag one flight.

Fares are distance-based and paid by token or card at the counter; keep small notes for the token queue. Trolleys are not available inside stations, and porters are rare compared with the mainline railway station next door. If you have two large cases plus hand luggage, take a pre-booked car from the airport instead of the Airport Express and metro combination. The Airport Express reaches New Delhi station in about 20 minutes; from there a short auto-rickshaw ride to a Chandni Chowk hotel is the simplest transfer.

Walking the last stretch to your hotel

From Chandni Chowk station's exit near the Town Hall, the lanes toward Fatehpuri Masjid are flat but narrow, shared with cycle rickshaws, handcarts and pedestrians. A wheeled suitcase works on the main Chandni Chowk stretch, which is pedestrianised in parts, but the side lanes toward Ballimaran and Khari Baoli are uneven and often wet from the spice and produce trade. Ask your hotel to send someone to meet you at the station exit; most small properties around Sitaram Bazar and Katra Neel do this as a matter of routine.

If your hotel is deeper into the old city, an e-rickshaw from the station exit costs little and saves the walk, but agree the fare and confirm the driver knows the property name and the nearest landmark, not just the street. The area is at its most congested on Sundays and during the Ramzan evening markets; a Tuesday or Wednesday arrival is noticeably calmer. Carry your booking confirmation with the hotel phone number, as lane names change between maps and locals use landmark names instead.

When to come, and what to skip

October to March is the comfortable window, with December and January mornings foggy enough to delay flights and trains. April to June is hot and the walk from station to hotel with luggage becomes unpleasant by mid-morning. The monsoon months of July and September bring short heavy downpours that flood the old-city lanes, so a suitcase with wheels and a waterproof cover earns its place. If you are visiting the Red Fort and Jama Masjid, base yourself in Old Delhi for two nights and move to a Connaught Place or Aerocity hotel for the rest of the trip.

Skip the temptation to drag luggage through Chandni Chowk's main bazaar on a weekend afternoon; the crowd is dense and there is nowhere to pause. Skip the New Delhi station cloakroom if you are only in the city for a day, as the queues at the mainline side can eat an hour. Do book a hotel within a ten-minute walk of Chandni Chowk station's lift exit, and confirm in writing that they offer luggage assistance. Given current demand, Old Delhi properties fill quickly for the winter months, so reserve early.

Questions, answered

Can I take a large suitcase on the Delhi Metro?

Yes. Suitcases are X-rayed at the entrance and must fit on the belt, so you lift it yourself. All Old Delhi stations have lifts, but escalators sometimes run upward only at peak times, meaning you may carry the case down stairs.

Which station is best for an Old Delhi hotel?

Chandni Chowk on the Yellow Line. The lift exit puts you within a short walk of hotels around Fatehpuri Masjid and Sitaram Bazar. Lal Qila on the Violet Line is closer to the Red Fort but quieter and darker at night.

How do I get from IGI Airport to Old Delhi with bags?

Take the Airport Express to New Delhi station, about 20 minutes, then a short auto-rickshaw to your hotel. With two large cases, a pre-booked car direct from the airport is simpler than changing trains with luggage.
