Delhi Airport to Old Delhi: Metro or Cab, and Where to Stay

A practical comparison of the Airport Express line and road transfer to Old Delhi, with station names, timings and neighbourhood advice for booking the right hotel.

The two routes, precisely

Indira Gandhi International sits about 16 km southwest of Connaught Place and roughly 20 km from Old Delhi's Chandni Chowk. The Airport Express runs from Terminal 3 to New Delhi railway station, one stop from the Old Delhi side; from the airport the journey takes around 20 minutes and trains leave every 10 to 15 minutes between roughly 5 am and 11:30 pm. Terminal 1 and Terminal 2 passengers need the free inter-terminal shuttle to reach the T3 station first, which adds time you should budget for.

By road, the same trip via the NH-48 and Ring Road typically takes 35 to 50 minutes outside peak hours, and 70 to 90 minutes in the 8 to 10 am and 5 to 8 pm crush. A prepaid taxi from the airport counters or an app cab both work; the prepaid desk fixes the fare before you travel, which avoids haggling at 2 am. Old Delhi's lanes around Chandni Chowk and Chawri Bazaar are narrow and congested, so most drivers stop on the main road and you walk the last few hundred metres.

When the metro wins

Take the Airport Express if you land between early morning and late evening, carry one or two bags, and your hotel is near New Delhi station, RK Ashram Marg or within reach of the Yellow Line. The train is air-conditioned, predictable and unaffected by traffic, which matters most on weekday mornings. From New Delhi station you can transfer to the Yellow Line for Chawri Bazaar — the closest metro stop to the heart of Old Delhi — or take a short auto-rickshaw ride if your bags are heavy.

The line does have friction points. Lifts and escalators are not guaranteed at every exit, and the walk from the Airport Express platform at New Delhi station to the mainline concourse is long and busy. If you are travelling with elderly companions, a stroller or three large suitcases, the platform changes alone can undo the time you saved. Arriving after 11 pm the metro is not an option at all, so plan the road route as a backup regardless of your preference.

When a cab is worth it

Book a cab if you land after midnight, arrive with family, or your hotel sits deep in Old Delhi near Fatehpuri Masjid, Sitaram Bazaar or the lanes off Dariba Kalan. A door-to-door drop removes the transfer at New Delhi station and the final negotiation with an auto driver, which is where most first-time arrivals lose an hour. For two or more travellers splitting the fare, the gap between road and rail narrows considerably, and the door-to-door convenience is real.

Ask the driver to drop at a landmark your hotel recognises — the Red Fort's Lahori Gate, the Chandni Chowk metro entrance, or the main road near Jama Masjid — and confirm the hotel's exact approach before you set off. Old Delhi's numbered katras and gated lanes confuse even experienced drivers, and some streets are pedestrian-only during trading hours. Keep small notes for the final stretch; many shops and hotels in the old city still handle cash for incidentals rather than card.

Where to book, and what to skip

For a first trip, I would book a hotel in Old Delhi itself if the trip is about the food streets, spice market and monuments — the atmosphere at dawn around Khari Baoli is the reason to be there. Choose Paharganj or the roads near New Delhi station if you want metro access and easier luggage handling, and Karol Bagh if you want mid-range comfort with the Blue Line close by. Book early for October to March, the comfortable season; May and June are punishingly hot and July to September brings heavy monsoon rain.

Skip hotels that promise airport pickups without a named driver or a confirmed vehicle type, and be wary of any listing that cannot tell you which metro station or main road it sits near. In Old Delhi, ask directly whether a car can reach the door, because many properties are inside lanes only autos and cycle-rickshaws can enter. A quick message to the hotel before booking settles it, and saves an awkward arrival at midnight with luggage in a lane.

Questions, answered

How long does the Airport Express take to reach central Delhi?

About 20 minutes from Terminal 3 to New Delhi railway station, with trains every 10 to 15 minutes from roughly 5 am to 11:30 pm. Add 15 to 20 minutes if you land at Terminal 1 or 2, since you must take the free shuttle to T3 first.

Is a cab from Delhi Airport to Old Delhi reliable at night?

Yes, provided you use the official prepaid taxi counters in the arrivals hall or a reputable app. Fixed prepaid fares avoid negotiation, and drivers know the main-road drop points near Chandni Chowk and Jama Masjid. Have your hotel's landmark name and phone number ready.

Which metro station is closest to Old Delhi's main sights?

Chawri Bazaar on the Yellow Line puts you within walking distance of Chandni Chowk, Jama Masjid and the spice market at Khari Baoli. Lal Qila station serves the Red Fort. From New Delhi railway station, transfer to the Yellow Line for Chawri Bazaar — two stops.
