Autumn in Agra: Plans for a New Delhi Stay
Agra works best as a day trip or an overnight from the capital, and October to March is when the weather cooperates.
Why the Season Shapes the Trip
Agra sits about 210 kilometres south-east of New Delhi, roughly a three-and-a-half to four-hour drive on the Yamuna Expressway, or around two hours by train from Hazrat Nizamuddin or New Delhi station to Agra Cantt. From late October through February the air is cooler and the days are clearer; December and January mornings can be foggy enough to delay trains and obscure the domes. May and June push past 40°C, and July to September brings humidity and heavy rain. If you want photographs of the Taj Mahal without haze, aim for November or February.
Build the trip around sunrise. The Taj Mahal opens at sunrise, and the first hour is the quietest and softest light of the day. Foreign tickets cost more than Indian ones, and the site is closed on Fridays, so plan around that. The main gate at the east and west entrances queues early in peak season. Rather than chase the famous Diana bench view, walk the length of the gardens towards the mosque for a cleaner frame with fewer people.
What to See Beyond the Taj
The Agra Fort, a short drive from the Taj, holds the Musamman Burj where Shah Jahan was held and from which the Taj is visible across the river. Allow an hour and a half. Across the Yamuna, Mehtab Bagh gives a riverbank view back towards the mausoleum, best in late afternoon. Itmad-ud-Daulah, the small tomb known as the Baby Taj, is usually quiet and worth thirty minutes. Fatehpur Sikri sits around 40 kilometres west, so it eats half a day; I would skip it on a first two-night visit and choose it only if you have a third day.
For a different angle, head to Agra's Kinari Bazaar in the old city for marble inlay and leatherwork, or take a short drive to the abandoned city at Fatehpur Sikri's quieter neighbour, Sikandra, where Akbar's tomb sits in a walled garden. Cycle tours along the back lanes near the Taj start early and finish before the heat builds. You do not need a car and driver for central Agra; auto-rickshaws are quick and cheap for short hops, but agree on the fare first or use a metered app.
Where to Stay in Agra
Hotels cluster in three zones. The Taj Ganj area, directly south of the monument, is full of budget guesthouses and mid-range properties, many with rooftop restaurants facing the domes; expect basic rooms under about 3,000 rupees a night but thin walls. East Gate and Fatehabad Road have international chains and larger mid-range hotels with pools, often around 5,000 to 12,000 rupees in season. Sadar Bazaar, near Agra Cantt station, is convenient for early trains and has cheaper, plainer accommodation but no monument views.
I would book a mid-range hotel on Fatehabad Road for a first visit with family, because the pool and quiet matter after a hot morning, and the drive to the East Gate is under ten minutes. For couples or photographers, choose a Taj Ganj rooftop property and pay for the view. Ask for a room facing away from the road. Book two to three weeks ahead for December and January weekends, when wedding season and holiday travel fill the better rooms.
Making the New Delhi Base Work
Most travellers sleep in New Delhi and visit Agra in a long day, which is efficient but tiring. New Delhi's strongest base for this plan is around Connaught Place and Janpath, close to New Delhi station and the Airport Express line, with easy access to the Delhi Metro. Aerocity near the airport suits early flights but is remote from the city sights. South Delhi neighbourhoods such as Hauz Khas and Greater Kailash are quieter and greener, with good restaurants, but add time to any railway departure.
My recommendation is two nights in Agra and three or four in New Delhi, rather than a single punishing day return. Take the early morning train from Hazrat Nizamuddin, arrive before the crowds, and stay overnight so you can see the Taj at sunrise on day two. Compare Delhi hotel rates against Agra rates before booking; mid-range Delhi rooms in Connaught Place often cost more than Agra's, so put the money where the view is. Avoid the day-return coach tours that combine Agra with Mathura and leave little more than ninety minutes at the monument.
Questions, answered
How many days do I need in Agra?
Two nights lets you see the Taj Mahal at sunrise, the fort and Mehtab Bagh without rushing. A single day trip is possible but leaves only a couple of hours on the ground after travel.
When is the best time to visit from New Delhi?
November and February give the clearest skies and mild days. Expect fog in late December and January that can delay trains and hide the monument at dawn. Avoid May and June heat.
Should I stay near the Taj or near the station?
Taj Ganj and Fatehabad Road put you within ten minutes of the East Gate and offer views. Sadar Bazaar near Agra Cantt is better for very early departures but has no monument outlook.
