Las Vegas Strip in December: Weather, Rates and What's On
Cool, clear days, the year's biggest room-rate swings and a calendar that fills the Strip without the summer crowds.
What December weather actually feels like on the Strip
December on the Las Vegas Strip is dry and bright, not warm. Daytime highs sit near 14°C, nights drop to around 4°C, and the wind that funnels between the casino towers makes the walk from the Bellagio fountains to Caesars Palace feel colder than the number suggests. Rain is rare but not unknown, and snow on the valley floor is a genuine event. Practical kit: a jacket you can carry indoors, because every casino runs its air conditioning hard whatever the month.
The upside is that heat is never the reason to cut a day short. Walking from the Park MGM end of the Strip to the Wynn is roughly 3.5 km and takes 50–60 minutes at a normal pace with crossings; in July you would not attempt it at midday. December is the month for the outdoor parts of the trip: the Bellagio conservatory, the LINQ Promenade, the Neon Museum's evening boneyard tour, and the view from the High Roller observation wheel, where a clear night is worth the cold.
Room rates: when December is cheap and when it is not
Early December is one of the softest periods of the Las Vegas year for hotel pricing, sitting between the post-Thanksgiving lull and the Christmas build-up. Midweek nights in the first two weeks often come in well below the same rooms in March or October, and resort fees, which are charged per night on the Strip, can add a noticeable share on top of a cheap headline rate. Always compare the total including the fee and the parking charge before you decide one property is cheaper than another.
The picture flips in the last ten days. Christmas week and the run-up to New Year's Eve are the most expensive nights of the year on the Strip, with multi-night minimum stays common and rates that can multiply several times over the early-month figures. If your dates are flexible, book the first half of the month. If they are not, book as early as you can and accept that the 31st is a premium night wherever you stay.
What is on, and where to base yourself
National Finals Rodeo takes over the Thomas & Mack Center for about ten days in early December and pulls a huge, loyal crowd into the city; rooms and shows sell out around it, so check the dates before you fix a week. The Las Vegas Bowl at Allegiant Stadium brings a college football crowd later in the month. Beyond that, the resident shows run as usual: the Cirque du Soleil productions at the Bellagio, Park MGM and Luxor, plus the comedy and magician rooms. The Holiday displays at the Bellagio conservatory and the Ethel M Cactus Garden are free or cheap and genuinely worth the detour.
For a first visit in December I would book mid-Strip, around the Bellagio, Caesars Palace or the Cosmopolitan, because it puts the fountains, the LINQ Promenade and the tram within walking distance and shortens the cold walks. Budget-conscious travellers should look at the Flamingo or the Horseshoe, which sit on the same stretch. Downtown, around Fremont Street, is a different trip: cheaper rooms, the Neon Museum nearby and a livelier street scene, but you will want a car or a rideshare for the Strip. Skip the far south end unless you are going to Allegiant Stadium.
Getting there and getting around
Harry Reid International Airport is about 5 km from the south end of the Strip and 8 km from mid-Strip, a 15–25 minute drive depending on traffic on the airport connector and Tropicana Avenue. Rideshare pickups are well signposted. Once you are on the Strip, the Las Vegas Monorail runs behind the east-side resorts from the Sahara to the MGM Grand, and the free tram links Park MGM, the Bellagio and the Aria. In December those covered links are worth planning around rather than walking outside.
Book flights early for the last two weeks of December and midweek for the first half; December is not a peak air month in Nevada except around the holidays. If you plan to add a day trip, Red Rock Canyon is about 30 minutes west of the Strip and Valley of Fire roughly an hour northeast, both best visited on a clear, cool morning. Rent a car only for those days; parking fees at Strip resorts make a car an expensive companion if you stay put.
Questions, answered
Is December a good month to visit the Las Vegas Strip?
Yes, if you accept jacket weather. Days are cool and mostly dry, crowds are lighter in the first half of the month, and room rates are among the lowest of the year. The last ten days are busy and expensive.
How cold does it get on the Strip in December?
Daytime highs are around 14°C and nights near 4°C, with wind between the towers making it feel colder. Snow on the valley floor is rare. Pack layers you can remove indoors, where air conditioning runs year-round.
Should I stay mid-Strip or downtown in December?
Mid-Strip around the Bellagio and Caesars is the easiest base for a first visit, with trams and short walks between resorts. Downtown near Fremont Street is cheaper and livelier but needs a car or rideshare for the Strip.
