Driving US-93 and US-50: Ely to Great Basin in Autumn

A practical loop through White Pine County, with the towns, distances and timing that make a fall trip work.

The run south from Ely

US-93 south out of Ely is the spine of this trip. Great Basin National Park sits about 65 miles east and south via US-50 and NV-488, roughly 75 minutes of driving with almost no traffic once you clear the junction. Fill the tank in Ely before you go; gas between there and Baker is thin. Baker itself is small, with a couple of places to eat and a store, so plan lunch either in Ely beforehand or at the park. Cell coverage fades past the junction, so download maps in advance rather than trusting the signal.

Ely works as the base for the first night. It is the largest town in White Pine County, with motels and small hotels clustered along Aultman Street and US-93, and rates in fall typically land well below Las Vegas levels. The Nevada Northern Railway runs excursion trains from the East Ely depot, and the depot and railway museum are worth two hours if you are travelling with anyone who likes machinery. Book a room in Ely rather than gambling on Baker; accommodation near the park is limited and fills on fall weekends.

Autumn inside the park and on Mount Wheeler

September and early October are the sweet spot. Wheeler Peak's aspen groves turn gold on the slopes above the Wheeler Peak Campground, and the scenic drive to the Summit Trail parking area climbs past 10,000 feet. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive is paved but steep, and it closes with the first heavy snow, often late October into November. Check park road status before committing. Lehman Caves tours run year-round and need reservations in fall; the cave stays around 50 degrees, so bring a layer even on a warm afternoon.

The Upper Lehman Creek and Island Forest trails are gentle enough for a half day at altitude, and the Baker Creek road leads to quieter trailheads. Allow two nights minimum if you want a cave tour plus a real hike. Mornings at 7,000 feet in late September hover near freezing, while afternoons can reach the high 60s, so pack layers rather than one jacket. This is the part of the trip that rewards not rushing: driving in, touring the cave, sleeping nearby and walking the next morning beats a single long day trip from Ely.

Where to stay and what to skip

For the park nights, Baker has a small number of lodges and guest ranches close to the entrance, and they book out first on fall weekends. If those are gone, staying in Ely and driving in each day costs about 75 minutes each way but gives you more choice and easier restaurant access. I would book Baker for one night and Ely for the others, then treat Ely as the anchor for the whole loop. Reservations open months ahead for cave tours, and lodging near the park follows the same pattern.

Skip the temptation to loop back west via US-6 to Tonopah unless you genuinely enjoy long empty stretches; it adds hours with little to see. Instead, spend the second day on the park's northern access or drive the Success Loop south of Ely, where aspen and cottonwood colour the canyons in October. If you are coming from Las Vegas, the drive north on I-15 and US-93 takes about four hours to Ely, so a first night there makes sense before the park. Book the Ely hotel early in the week of travel rather than the weekend.

Timing, weather and the drive in

Coming from southern Nevada, most travellers start in Las Vegas or North Las Vegas, where hotel supply is deepest and rates are easiest to compare. The 240-mile run to Ely via I-15 and US-93 takes about four hours with a stop in Pioche or Caliente, both old railroad and mining towns worth a leg stretch. Do not attempt the whole Las Vegas to Baker push in one go in the dark; deer and elk move at dusk on US-50 and US-93, and the road is unlit for long stretches.

Late September through mid-October gives the best mix of colour and open roads, though nights drop below freezing at elevation. Spring brings wildflowers but more wind. Winter can close the scenic drive entirely. Whatever the season, carry water, a full tank and a paper map, and check the park's website for road and cave-tour status the morning you leave. Of the options, I would book Ely for the first and last nights and Baker for the middle one, then build the days around the cave tour slot.

Questions, answered

How long is the drive from Ely to Great Basin National Park?

Roughly 65 miles via US-50 and NV-488, about 75 minutes. Fuel up in Ely first, as services near Baker are limited and cell coverage is patchy past the junction.

When is the best time for fall colour near Wheeler Peak?

Late September to mid-October is usually peak for aspen. The Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive often closes after the first heavy snow, so check road status before you set out.

Should I stay in Ely or near the park?

Ely has more rooms and restaurants, while Baker sits minutes from the entrance but books out on fall weekends. A night in each, with Ely as the anchor, works well.
