Carson City to Virginia City: The Scenic Back-Road Drive Through Nevada's Comstock

A 40-minute run on US-50 and State Route 341 that trades the interstate for silver-rush towns, high-desert views and an easy return through Washoe Valley.

The Route: Carson City to Mound House on US-50

Start at the Nevada State Capitol on North Carson Street, fill the tank, and head east on US-50. The first ten miles climb gently past the Carson City Airport and the Prison Hill trailheads before the valley opens toward Dayton. Traffic thins immediately after the junction with US-395, and by the time you reach Mound House — about 12 miles and 15 minutes in — you are already in open desert with the Virginia Range rising on your left. Fill water bottles in Carson City; services between here and Virginia City are limited.

Turn north at Mound House onto State Route 341, the Truck Route. This is the stretch most drivers skip and the one worth slowing down for. The road climbs roughly 1,400 feet in seven miles through piñon and juniper, with pullouts overlooking the Carson River valley. Cycling groups use this grade on weekend mornings, so give them room. The surface is good, the grades are steady, and you will likely have long views to yourself on a weekday.

Virginia City: What to See and What to Skip

Route 341 drops you onto C Street at the north end of town. Park once — the Silverland Inn lot or the free spaces along C Street — and walk. The main drag is C Street itself, lined with the wooden storefronts, saloons and the old opera house that draw most visitors. The Fourth Ward School Museum at the south end and the Chollar Mine tour are the two stops that consistently earn their time; both run on seasonal hours, so check ahead in winter. Allow two to three hours on foot.

Skip the trolley if you can walk; the town is only about half a mile end to end. Skip, too, the temptation to drive up on a summer Saturday afternoon — C Street jams solid by midday and parking near the Bucket of Blood Saloon fills early. Go on a weekday morning, or come in late September when the aspens on the upper streets turn and the crowds thin. Summer afternoons regularly hit the high 80s; spring and early autumn are the comfortable months.

The Return: Six Mile Canyon and the Alternative Route

For the way back, take State Route 342, the Truck Route's lower sibling, west out of town through Six Mile Canyon. The road is narrow and winding, posted for low speeds, and it threads between old mine tailings and cottonwoods before meeting US-50 east of Dayton. It is slower than 341 but far more scenic, and it puts you back on the highway about 13 miles from Carson City. Do not attempt it in a large RV or with a trailer; the turns are tight.

If you want a longer loop, continue north from Virginia City on Route 341 toward Silver City and Gold Hill, then down to Reno — roughly 25 miles and 40 minutes — and return south on US-395 through Washoe Valley, which gives you a straight run back with the Sierra on your right. That adds an hour but turns a half-day into a full one. My pick for a first visit is the simple out-and-back via Six Mile Canyon; save the Reno loop for a second trip.

Where to Base Yourself

Carson City makes the most sense as a base. It sits at the junction of US-50 and US-395, rooms are plentiful along South Carson Street and near the casino corridor, and you are 30 to 40 minutes from Virginia City, 30 minutes from Lake Tahoe's east shore and an hour from Reno-Tahoe International Airport. Rates in the mid-range brackets cluster around the chain properties on Carson Street; booking midweek in spring or fall is the easiest way to keep costs down.

Reno suits travellers who want more evening options and a bigger choice of hotels downtown or along the river. The trade-off is a longer, busier drive to Virginia City — closer to 45 minutes via Route 341 — and more traffic on summer weekends. For a trip built around this drive, I would book Carson City, use it as a two-night base, and keep Reno for a dinner or an airport night at either end.

Questions, answered

How long does the drive from Carson City to Virginia City take?

About 40 minutes via US-50 east to Mound House and State Route 341 north, a distance of roughly 25 miles. Allow longer on summer weekends and in winter, when the upper grade can ice over.

Is the road to Virginia City suitable for an RV?

State Route 341 is a steady climb with curves and is manageable in a mid-size RV. Six Mile Canyon on Route 342 is narrow and winding and is not suitable for large rigs or trailers. Check conditions before setting out in winter.

When is the best time of year to make this drive?

Late April through June and September through October offer the most comfortable temperatures and lighter crowds. Summer afternoons are hot and C Street gets busy; winter can bring snow and ice on the 341 grade, so check the forecast first.
