Nairobi in the November–December Holiday Window: What to Book

Nairobi's short-rains season and school holidays overlap in November and December, which changes where you should stay, when you should drive, and what you should book first.

What to skip, and what I would book

Skip the city centre for sleeping unless you have business there. The streets around Moi Avenue and Tom Mboya Street are busy and thin on evening dining, and the area empties after dark. Skip the temptation to add a day trip to Naivasha or Amboseli inside a three-night Nairobi stay — the drive and the activity do not fit comfortably. Also skip bargain rooms advertised without a street address; in December, demand makes last-minute substitutions common and you want a confirmed property in a known neighbourhood.

If I were booking for a family arriving in the last week of December, I would take a hotel in Karen or Langata with a garden, breakfast included, and confirmed airport pickup, then keep one full day for the Giraffe Centre and the elephant orphanage and one for Karura Forest. For a couple or a solo traveller, a smaller property in Kilimani or Kileleshwa makes more sense: walkable to coffee and restaurants, quick to Westlands, and easier on the budget. Book by early November for December dates, and confirm the room type in writing.

Questions, answered

Is November or December better for a Nairobi visit?

November is greener and quieter, with more afternoon rain but softer hotel demand. December is drier and livelier, but school holidays push rates and availability at the best Westlands and Upper Hill hotels. Book earlier for December.

How far is Nairobi airport from the main hotel areas?

Expect 25–40 minutes to Kilimani or Upper Hill outside peak hours, and up to 75 minutes in evening traffic. Karen and Langata take roughly 45 minutes via the Southern Bypass. Arrange a hotel transfer for arrival.

Do I need a car in Nairobi?

Not for a short city stay. Ride-hailing is widely used and cheaper than a rental once parking and congestion are counted. A car helps for Karen, Limuru and day trips, but cross-city driving in rush hour is best avoided.
