Girgaon With Kids: A Family Guide to Mumbai's Oldest Quarter
Chowpatty's sand, Malabar Hill's playgrounds and a neighbourhood where every corner is a story — Girgaon rewards families who slow down.
Why Girgaon Works for Families
Girgaon, the old heart of Mumbai, runs from Girgaum Chowpatty up to Malabar Hill and across to the Kalbadevi lanes. For families it has three rare advantages: the sea is walkable, the streets south of the main road are quiet enough for a stroller, and almost everything worth seeing sits within two kilometres. You can do a morning at the beach, a temple or two, lunch, and be back at the hotel before the afternoon heat peaks. That rhythm matters enormously in a city where crossing a neighbourhood can take forty minutes in traffic.
Chowpatty beach is the anchor. The sand is coarse and the water is not for swimming — anyone telling you otherwise has not looked closely — but the broad promenade is flat, paved and perfect for scooters, toddlers and grandparents alike. Go between 6am and 9am when the air is still cool and the local walkers are out. Avoid weekend evenings, when crowds thicken considerably and parking becomes a genuine headache.
Around Malabar Hill and the Towers of Silence
Above the beach, Malabar Hill climbs steeply through some of Mumbai's leafiest residential streets. At the top, the Hanging Gardens and Kamala Nehru Park sit back to back, and together they make the best children's stop in South Mumbai. Kamala Nehru has the old boot-shaped structure kids love and a playground, while the Hanging Gardens offers trimmed hedges and shade. Entry is free, and the sea views across to Marine Drive are excellent in clear weather. Early morning or after 4pm is kindest to small children.
Note that the Towers of Silence near the gardens are a Parsi funerary site and not a visitor attraction; do not try to walk in. Instead, follow the ridge down toward Babulnath temple, which is lively but manageable with children if you remove shoes and cover heads. The lanes below, around Nana Chowk, have juice stalls and bakeries that make a natural midpoint break before you head back to the seafront.
Eating, Buying and Getting Around
Girgaon's food is a major reason to base yourselves here. Along Girgaum Chowpatty, the stalls selling bhel puri and pav bhaji are cheap, fast and reliable, and portion sizes suit sharing. For sit-down family meals, the restaurants around Charni Road station and the quieter stretches of Sandhurst Bridge Road offer thali and South Indian breakfasts at moderate prices — expect to pay noticeably less than at Marine Drive's hotel dining rooms. Picky children will find plain rice, dal and dosa everywhere. Carry bottled water and use it for brushing teeth.
On transport: Girgaon is served by Charni Road and Grant Road stations on the Western Line, which makes it easy to reach from the airport side of town and from Bandra or Andheri. Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus is a short taxi ride east. Between November and February the weather is at its best, and this is when I would book. Skip June to September unless you are comfortable with heavy monsoon rain that turns lanes into streams.
Which Area to Book In
For a family stay, I would choose a hotel between Girgaum Chowpatty and Charni Road: you get the sea at the end of the street, the station within walking distance, and easy access to both the beach and the Malabar Hill gardens. The lanes closer to Kalbadevi are cheaper but noisier and much harder with a stroller, and the wholesale market crowds there are not ideal for small children. If you can stretch slightly, Marine Drive hotels are calmer in the evening, though you lose the immediate neighbourhood feel.
Practical notes: Girgaon's pavements are uneven, so a lightweight folding stroller beats a bulky one. Carry tissues and hand sanitiser, and plan a proper rest period after lunch — the mid-afternoon heat is real. Book hotels well ahead for weekends and during festival periods, when South Mumbai fills up. Use our search to compare Girgaon and Chowpatty properties for your dates, and filter for family rooms before you commit.
Questions, answered
Is Girgaon a good area to stay in Mumbai with children?
Yes, for families who value walkability. Chowpatty beach, Malabar Hill's parks and Charni Road station are all close, and the streets are quieter than central Mumbai. Choose the seafront side over the Kalbadevi lanes for easier strolling.
What is the best time of year to visit Girgaon with kids?
November to February brings the coolest, driest weather and is by far the most comfortable for walking and beach time. Avoid June to September, when monsoon rain makes the lanes and pavements difficult with children.
How do families get around Girgaon?
Most of the neighbourhood is walkable. Use Charni Road or Grant Road stations on the Western Line for longer trips, and taxis for the airport or CSMT. A lightweight folding stroller copes better with the uneven pavements than a large one.
