Getting to Mexico for the Holidays: Flights, Transfers and Parking
How to time flights into Benito Juárez and Santa Lucía, get from either airport to Roma, Condesa or Polanco, and park sensibly in December.
Booking December flights: which airport, which month
Peak demand for Mexico City runs roughly 18 December to 6 January, and seats into Benito Juárez (MEX) tighten from the first week of December. Booking in late September or early October is the realistic window for fares that are merely expensive rather than painful; leaving it to November usually means red-eyes or two stops. Weekday departures on 22–23 December and returns on 2–4 January are the least crowded. Southbound morning arrivals into MEX are usually the smoothest, because immigration queues build badly after 14:00 when the long-haul bank lands together.
Mexico City now has three airports, and the difference matters. Benito Juárez sits 6 km east of the Centro Histórico, 12–14 km from Roma Norte and about 15 km from Polanco. Felipe Ángeles (NLU) at Santa Lucía is 45–50 km north in the State of Mexico, roughly 70–90 minutes by road in holiday traffic. Toluca (TLC) is 60 km west, about an hour on the toll road when it flows. If your hotel is in Roma, Condesa or Polanco, MEX is worth paying more for; a cheap NLU fare plus a long transfer rarely wins.
Transfers: metered taxis, apps and pre-booked cars
At Benito Juárez, authorised airport taxis are sold from counters inside each terminal — you pay before boarding, which avoids the unlicensed touts working the arrivals hall. Fares are set by zone, so ask the counter for Roma Norte or Polanco and keep the receipt. Ride-hailing apps pick up from designated areas outside the terminals rather than the kerb, and demand surges hard on 24 and 31 December. The Metrobús Line 4 and the Metro's Terminal Aérea station are cheap options with light luggage, but not with three suitcases and a child.
From NLU the practical choice is a pre-booked private transfer or an app, arranged before you fly; counters are thinner and late-night arrivals have fewer options. Allow 90 minutes to Roma or Condesa in the evening peak. Toluca is easier: the Interjet-era buses are gone, so book a shuttle or car, or take the toll road if you have a rental. My recommendation: pre-book a flat-rate private car for any arrival after 20:00 at MEX or NLU, and take the airport taxi counter in daylight. Arriving by bus or car, and where to leave the car
Long-distance buses are genuinely good here. From Puebla, the ADO runs from CAPU to Mexico City's TAPO terminal in about two hours; from Querétaro, roughly three hours to Observatorio or Norte. TAPO connects to the Metro Line 1 and is a short taxi ride from the Centro. If you drive, the Mexico–Puebla and Mexico–Querétaro toll roads are fast and well maintained, but the Periférico and Circuito Interior jam badly in the week before Christmas — plan arrivals before 08:00 or after 21:00.
Hotel parking in Roma and Condesa is scarce and often valet-only; expect to pay per night and confirm before booking, since many small properties have none. Polanco and the Periférico corridor hotels have proper garages and are the easier choice if you are keeping a car. For day trips, leave it: the Estacionamiento Zona Rosa and similar lot facilities near Reforma cost less than hotel rates, and the Metrobús runs along Reforma. Skip driving to Teotihuacán on 25 December and 1 January — tour buses fill the site car park by 09:00 and the return crawl is long.
Holiday timing, weather and what to skip
December in Mexico City is dry and cool: daytime around 20 °C, nights down to 6–8 °C, and almost no rain. That is comfortable for walking but cold in unheated hotel rooms, so ask about heating in Roma or Coyoacán conversions. The city empties out for locals between 24 December and 1 January, which means quieter streets but also closed restaurants; neighbourhoods like Condesa keep more open than the Centro. Book tables for Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve well in advance.
Beach trips need different planning. Flights to Cancún and Puerto Vallarta spike from 20 December, and the Riviera Maya road from the airport to Tulum can take twice as long on 26–30 December. If the plan is a few city days then sun, fly into Mexico City first and take a domestic hop from MEX rather than routing through the United States. Skip 31 December for a long transfer day; celebrate locally instead. For stays, base yourself in Roma Norte or Polanco and book early — the holiday calendars fill first.
Questions, answered
How far ahead should I book flights to Mexico City for Christmas?
Aim for late September or early October. Fares into Benito Juárez climb steeply from early December, and by mid-November the cheapest options usually involve a stop or a red-eye. Weekday departures around 22–23 December and returns on 2–4 January are less crowded.
Is Felipe Ángeles (NLU) worth using if it is cheaper?
Only if the saving is substantial. NLU is 45–50 km north of the city, roughly 70–90 minutes to Roma or Condesa in traffic, and transfers cost real money. For a short city break based in Roma, Condesa or Polanco, Benito Juárez is usually the better value overall.
How much is a taxi from Mexico City airport to Roma Norte?
Authorised airport taxis are sold by zone from counters inside the terminal and are paid before you travel, so the price is fixed rather than metered. Ask for Roma Norte at the counter and keep the receipt. Ride-hailing apps are often cheaper but surge on 24 and 31 December.
Can I take the Metro from Benito Juárez with luggage?
Yes, Terminal Aérea on Line 5 is close, and Metrobús Line 4 also serves the airport. It is cheap and fine with a backpack and one small case, but avoid it with several suitcases, late at night, or during the 07:00–09:30 and 18:00–20:30 crush.
Which hotels in Mexico City have parking?
Larger properties in Polanco and along the Periférico corridor generally have garages. Small hotels in Roma and Condesa often have none or valet-only space. Confirm parking and the per-night charge directly with the hotel before booking, especially if you are arriving by car.
What is the best way to get from Mexico City to Teotihuacán over the holidays?
Take a morning tour or bus from the Centro; going before 08:00 avoids the worst crowds. Do not drive on 25 December or 1 January — the site car park fills by 09:00 and the return traffic is slow. The archaeology is worth the early start.
Is it better to fly between Mexican cities than drive at Christmas?
For Cancún, Puerto Vallarta or Oaxaca, yes. Domestic flights from MEX are quick and avoid long toll-road drives in holiday traffic. For Puebla or Querétaro, the ADO bus is comfortable, frequent and about two to three hours from the capital's terminals.
Should I rent a car in Mexico City at all?
Rarely for the city itself. Traffic, parking and restricted driving days make it a burden. Rent one only to leave the capital — for Puebla, Valle de Bravo or Querétaro — and collect it on the morning you depart rather than at the airport on arrival.
