A Winter Weekend in Menorca, Ibiza and Formentera: Where to Stay and What to See
Ferries thin out and many hotels close, but low-season Balearic weekends reward travellers who pick one island well, plan around the weather and know which coastal towns stay open.
Menorca in January: Mahón and Ciutadella
Menorca is the most comfortable of the three for a winter weekend because its two main towns stay inhabited. Base yourself in Mahón, where the harbour, the Cloister del Carmen and the fish market on Plaça de la Peixateria give you a full Saturday on foot, and hotels near the port stay open year-round. Ciutadella, 45 minutes away by the ME-1, is quieter but has the prettier old quarter. Expect 13 to 15°C by day and single figures after dark, so pack a warm layer for the evening paseo.
For coast and walking, drive 20 minutes from Mahón to Cala Galdana or the Camí de Cavalls path above Cala Macarella; the trail is open and empty, though beach bars are shuttered. A hire car is close to essential in winter, with very little bus service on Sundays. If you want one base for two nights, I would book Mahón over Ciutadella for the restaurants and the flight connections, and save Ciutadella for a long half-day.
Ibiza Town Out of Season
Ibiza in winter is a different island. Dalt Vila, the walled old town, is a UNESCO site and worth most of a morning, and the Museu d'Art Contemporani on Carrer de Sant Josep is open through the low season. Hotels in Ibiza Town, Marina Botafoch and Santa Eulària stay open; the resort strips around Sant Antoni and Playa d'en Bossa largely close from November to March. A seafront room in Figueretes or Talamanca costs far less than in July, which is the whole point of coming now.
Outside town, drive to Santa Gertrudis for lunch and the little church at Sant Miquel de Balansat, 25 minutes north on the Sant Joan road. Las Salinas and Es Cavallet are walkable but the beach clubs are dark. Walks around Cala d'Hort and the cliffs of Es Vedrà are spectacular and empty. Skip the club-focused south coast entirely in winter; it is a building site of closed shutters. I would book two nights in Ibiza Town for culture and food, not for nightlife.
Formentera: Short Ferry, Small Island
Formentera is the riskiest of the three in winter. The ferry from Eivissa to La Savina takes about 35 minutes and runs in all weathers, but a rough day can make the crossing uncomfortable. Once there, the island is tiny: Sant Francesc Xavier, the capital, has the church and a handful of cafés, and the lighthouse at Cap de Barbaria is a 15-minute drive south across a stark plateau. Ses Illetes and Llevant beaches are beautiful and near-deserted, though no lifeguards and no facilities.
Stay in Es Pujols or La Savina, where a few small hotels and hostales remain open; much of the island's accommodation closes between November and Easter, so check directly before booking. Bicycles are the practical way to cover the 2 to 3 kilometres between villages. I would not give Formentera a night of a two-night trip unless you are already on Ibiza: a day trip from Eivissa is enough in January, and a full weekend there can feel too quiet.
Getting There and Choosing One Island
Flying into Menorca (MAH) or Ibiza (IBZ) from mainland Spain takes roughly an hour from Barcelona or Valencia. Menorca is the better choice if you want walking and two towns; Ibiza if you want old-town architecture and a wider choice of open restaurants; Formentera if you want stillness and accept limited services. Inter-island ferries run from Eivissa to La Savina but not to Menorca, so combining all three in two days means too much time in transit.
Book accommodation with free cancellation and confirm opening dates by email before you travel: winter closures are common and websites lag. February is slightly milder than January and the almond blossom starts in Menorca. Bring a waterproof jacket and sturdy shoes, and reserve dinner tables in Mahón or Ibiza Town on Friday nights, when many places are full with residents rather than visitors.
Questions, answered
Which island should I choose for a winter weekend?
Menorca for walking and two lively towns, Ibiza for Dalt Vila and the best choice of open hotels and restaurants, Formentera only as a day trip. Trying all three in one weekend means too much ferry time.
Do hotels stay open in winter?
In Mahón, Ciutadella, Ibiza Town, Santa Eulària and Es Pujols, plenty do. The resort strips around Sant Antoni, Playa d'en Bossa and much of Formentera close. Always confirm dates directly before booking.
What is the weather like and what should I pack?
Expect 13 to 16°C by day and cooler evenings, with a real chance of rain and wind. Bring a waterproof jacket, warm layers and walking shoes; sea swimming is for the hardy only.
