Temple Days in Luxor at the Summer Solstice: Where to Go and When
Long, hot days at the solstice reward an early start, a shaded midday and a temple list ordered by how they handle the light.
Where to base yourself and what to skip
For a Summer Solstice trip I would book an East Bank hotel between the Corniche and the railway station, or along Sharia Khaled Ibn El Walid, where mid-range rooms cluster and you can walk to Luxor Temple and the ferry. The west bank around Gezira and El Tod is quieter and better for repeat visitors, but you will rely on the ferry or a taxi for every evening meal. Check that your room has working air conditioning and a pool before you commit.
Skip the horse-drawn caleches for long trips in the heat and skip any itinerary that puts the Valley of the Kings after eleven in June. Do not try to see Karnak and the west bank on the same morning; the crossing and the heat make it a poor trade. Three nights is enough for Karnak, Luxor Temple, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu, with a fourth if you want the Ramesseum and the Valley of the Queens at a civilised pace.
Questions, answered
Is there a special solstice event at Luxor's temples?
No. The solstice is not marked with a public ceremony or separate ticket at Karnak, Luxor Temple or the west bank sites. The main effect is the long day itself, and the alignment of Karnak's main axis with the midsummer sunrise, which rewards an early visit.
How early should I start in late June?
Aim to be at the gate for opening, around six, particularly at Karnak and Deir el-Bahari. Finish exposed sites by eleven, take a long shaded midday break, and return to Luxor Temple or Karnak's colonnades in the late afternoon or evening. Carry water and a hat.
How many nights do I need for the main temples?
Three nights covers Karnak, Luxor Temple, Hatshepsut and Medinet Habu comfortably at a summer pace. Add a fourth for the Ramesseum and the Valley of the Queens. Staying on the East Bank keeps evening access to Luxor Temple and the ferry simple.
