Where to Stay in Luxembourg Old Town: A Neighbourhood Guide
The Ville Haute puts you minutes from the Grand Ducal Palace and the Bock, but choosing the right street — and the right station — decides how much walking you actually do.
Hotels in Luxembourg Old Town: What the Ville Haute Actually Offers
Luxembourg's old town is the Ville Haute, the plateau between the Pétrusse and Alzette valleys. Stay here and the Grand Ducal Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral, Place Guillaume II and the Chemin de la Corniche are all within a ten-minute walk. The trade-off is geography: the centre sits above the valleys, so streets like Rue de la Loge and Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes are short, steep and largely pedestrian. If you arrive by train at Luxembourg Gare, allow 20–25 minutes on foot uphill, or take the free city bus or tram to Hamilius and walk two minutes.
Hotel stock in the old town is compact rather than plentiful. Expect a small cluster of four-star properties around Place d'Armes and Rue de l'Eau, a handful of three-star addresses near Rue Sigefroi, and very little budget accommodation inside the pedestrian core. Rooms on the square-facing side are the ones people ask for, and they are also the ones you should think twice about in July, when Place d'Armes hosts evening events and the terraces stay busy past midnight. Courtyard or upper-floor rooms facing Rue du Rost are quieter. Book four to six weeks ahead for May, June, September and the Christmas market period in December; February and November are the calmest months to find availability.
Ville Haute Versus Gare, Grund and Kirchberg
The Gare district, around the main station and Avenue de la Liberté, is the practical alternative: more rooms, more choice, and direct trains to the airport in about 20 minutes. The walk into the old town is 20–25 minutes uphill, but buses and the tram cost nothing and run constantly. The Grund, down in the Alzette valley below the Chemin de la Corniche, is the prettiest option — cobbled lanes, the Neumünster Abbey, and a ten-minute climb back up to the centre. It suits couples and anyone who values evening quiet over doorstep convenience, but the steps and gradients are real, and not ideal with heavy luggage.
Kirchberg, the plateau to the north-east, is business territory: the European institutions, the Philharmonie and the Mudam sit up there, with hotels that are larger and easier to book at short notice. It is 10–15 minutes by tram or bus to the old town. My recommendation: book the Ville Haute for a two- or three-night first visit, choosing a room away from Place d'Armes; choose Gare for early flights or rail connections; choose the Grund for a romantic weekend and Kirchberg only if work brings you there. Skip the valley hotels if stairs are a problem.
Arriving, Getting Around and Timing Your Stay
Findel Airport is about 6 km from the centre, roughly 15–20 minutes by car or bus 16, which drops you near the station and the Kirchberg tram. Public transport across Luxembourg has been free to use since 2020, including city buses and the tram, so a central hotel does not need to come with parking — and parking in the Ville Haute is limited and expensive anyway. If you are driving, look at hotels on the perimeter of the pedestrian zone rather than inside it, and check access restrictions on Rue de la Loge and Rue du Marché-aux-Herbes before you set off.
Late April to early October is the sweet spot: the terraces on Place d'Armes and Place Guillaume II are open, and the Chemin de la Corniche is at its best. December brings the Christmas markets on Place d'Armes and Place de la Constitution, which makes the old town atmospheric but busy — book early and expect square-facing rooms to be the first to go. Avoid the National Day period around 23 June if you want quiet. Above all, decide whether you are booking a location or a room: in the Ville Haute you are paying for the first, so ask for a high floor or an inner courtyard.
Questions, answered
Is it better to stay in Luxembourg Old Town or near the station?
The old town suits sightseeing on foot, with the palace, cathedral and Corniche within ten minutes. The Gare area offers more rooms and easier airport trains. Buses and the tram are free, so the 20-minute climb between them costs nothing but time.
How far is Findel Airport from central Luxembourg hotels?
Findel Airport is roughly 6 km from the Ville Haute, about 15–20 minutes by car or by bus 16, which connects the airport with the station and Kirchberg. Public transport in Luxembourg is free to use, including city buses and the tram.
When should I book a hotel in Luxembourg's old town?
Aim for late April to early October for terraces and the Corniche, and book four to six weeks ahead. December's Christmas markets on Place d'Armes fill quickly. February and November are the quietest, easiest months for availability.
