Where to Stay in Luxembourg City on a Budget
Luxembourg City is one of Europe's priciest hotel markets, but the right neighbourhood and the right month can cut your bill dramatically.
Why Luxembourg City Costs So Much — and Where the Cheap Rooms Hide
Luxembourg City has roughly 6,000 hotel beds for a country that draws millions of business travellers and EU officials every year, and the Ville Haute (old town) sits on a rocky plateau with almost no room to build. That scarcity pushes mid-range doubles in the centre toward 180-250 euros a night on weekdays. The workaround is simple: stay outside the gorge and ride the tram in. Since March 2020 all public transport in Luxembourg is free, so a hotel two or three kilometres out costs you nothing but ten minutes.
The best-value districts are Gare (around Luxembourg Station), Bonnevoie to its south-east and Hollerich to its south-west. Gare is the budget heart: a cluster of small family-run hotels and chains on Rue de Strasbourg and Rue du Fort Neipperg, three tram stops or a 15-minute walk from Place Guillaume II. Expect 90-140 euros for a simple double. Bonnevoie, along Rue de Bonnevoie toward the Ban de Gasperich, is quieter and often 20-30 euros cheaper for the same standard.
Three Budget Zones Compared
Gare wins on transport and price. Trains reach Luxembourg Station from Paris Est in about 2 hours 10 minutes, from Brussels in roughly 3 hours, and the free tram runs from the station through the centre to Kirchberg in under 20 minutes. It is not pretty: the area around Rue de Strasbourg is busy and loud at night. Ask for a room facing the courtyard. Bonnevoie suits light sleepers and anyone arriving by car, with parking around 15-20 euros a day and quick access to the A3 and A6 motorways.
Kirchberg, the plateau across the Grand Duchess Charlotte Bridge, is dominated by EU institutions and conference hotels. Weekend rates there can drop below weekday levels because business demand vanishes, which makes it a genuine bargain from Friday to Sunday, though the restaurants are chains and the streets empty out. Pfaffenthal, down in the Alzette valley beside the panoramic lift, has a handful of small guesthouses and is the most scenic budget option, but it is steep and awkward with heavy luggage. I would book Gare for a first visit of two or three nights.
When to Go and What to Skip
Rates peak during EU summit weeks and trade fairs at LuxExpo in Kirchberg, and during the Christmas markets in Place d'Armes and Place de la Constitution from late November to late December. The cheapest months are typically January and February outside the school holidays, and the first half of August, when locals leave and business travel thins. Spring from April to June and autumn in September and October give the best weather for the Chemin de la Corniche and the Casemates du Bock without peak prices. Book two to three months ahead for a weekend.
Skip the handful of 'boutique' rooms inside Ville Haute unless you find a genuine deal; you pay a large premium for the postcode. Skip hotels along the upper part of Avenue de la Liberté if you are noise-sensitive, and skip anything advertising parking without specifying a price, since central garages commonly run 20-25 euros a day. Also skip the trap of booking near Findel Airport; it is around 7 km east of the centre, and the free bus 16 takes about 20 minutes, so an airport hotel rarely saves money unless you have an early flight.
Questions, answered
Is it cheaper to stay outside Luxembourg City and commute in?
Usually not for a short trip. Neighbouring towns such as Esch-sur-Alzette, Dudelange and Mersch offer lower room rates, and trains and buses are free nationwide, but you lose 30-45 minutes each way. For two nights, central budget hotels in Gare or Bonnevoie are simpler and often comparable once you count the time.
How far ahead should I book a budget hotel in Luxembourg City?
For weeknights outside fair and summit periods, two to three weeks is usually enough. For weekends from May to September, or any date during the Christmas market season, book two to three months ahead. January and February give the widest choice of lower-priced rooms at short notice.
Do budget hotels in Luxembourg City include breakfast?
Many do, but it varies. Simple hotels around Gare commonly include a basic continental breakfast, while larger chain properties often charge extra. Luxembourg cafes serve coffee and pastries from around 8:00, and supermarkets near the station open early, so a room-only rate can work out cheaper.
