Mullerthal Trail: How to Plan a Multi-Day Walk with Overnight Stays

The 112 km Mullerthal Trail is best walked in three- to five-day stages, staying in Echternach, Berdorf, Consdorf, Larochette or Beaufort — here is how to link the stages without wasting a day on logistics.

The three routes and how they fit into a trip

The Mullerthal Trail is not one line but three loops. Route 2 is the classic one: 37 km from Echternach through Berdorf and Consdorf, past the rock formations at Huel Lee and the Wolfsschlucht gorge. Route 1 runs 38 km from Berdorf south to Beaufort, Larochette and back — the hilliest section, with the valley below Beaufort castle. Route 3 covers 37 km around Echternach and Rosport, gentler and mostly along the Sûre. If you have three days, walk Route 2 in two stages and Route 1's Beaufort–Larochette half on the third. If you have five, do all three with a rest afternoon in Echternach.

Stage lengths matter more than total distance. Route 2 from Echternach to Berdorf is about 13 km and can be done in a morning; Berdorf to Consdorf is short but rocky, with ladders and narrow passages that slow you down. Most walkers average 3 km/h on the sandstone, not 4. Plan no more than 18 km a day if you want to arrive before dark. The trail is waymarked with the letter M on a white field, but junctions around Berdorf and Consdorf have several variants — carry the free Mullerthal map from the Echternach tourist office.

Where to sleep, and what each base gives you

Echternach is the obvious base for the first and last nights: buses run from Luxembourg City every 30 minutes (about 45 minutes), and the town has the widest choice of hotels and guesthouses at every level. Berdorf and Consdorf are small villages with a handful of farm stays and small hotels — book these first, because they fill up on summer weekends. For Route 1, Larochette has a few guesthouses around the castle square, and Beaufort has a cluster of hotels near the castle and the Bernard Massard cider works. None of these villages have a station, so you will rely on the RGTR bus network.

My recommendation: base yourself in Echternach for two nights and do Route 2 as a loop with a bus back from Consdorf, then move to Beaufort for two nights to walk Route 1's southern half. That avoids carrying a pack on the rockiest sections and keeps you near restaurants in the evening. If you want a single base for the whole trip, Echternach works for Routes 2 and 3 but not for Route 1 — the daily bus to Beaufort takes over an hour and cuts into walking time.

Getting there, timing and costs to budget for

Luxembourg City is the gateway: trains from the Gare Centrale to Echternach do not exist, but bus line 110 from the city runs hourly and takes around 50 minutes. From the airport, take bus 16 to the centre and change. Public transport in Luxembourg is free, which keeps costs down. Drive times are short: Luxembourg City to Echternach is 35 minutes on the N11, to Larochette 30 minutes, to Beaufort 40 minutes. Parking in Echternach is paid on weekdays near the basilica but free at the St. Willibrord stadium car park, a 10-minute walk from the centre.

Best months are May, June and September — the sandstone dries quickly, and the woods are quiet. July and August are busiest, especially around the Wolfsschlucht, and the rock passages can be slippery after rain; bring shoes with grip, not trail runners. Skip November to February: many guesthouses in Berdorf and Consdorf close, and the shaded gorges stay wet. Budget for mid-range hotels in Echternach and Beaufort, with cheaper farm stays in the villages; check the hotel's own site for current rates rather than relying on old guides.

Questions, answered

How many days do I need for the Mullerthal Trail?

Three days covers Route 2 and part of Route 1 if you keep stages under 18 km. Five days lets you walk all three routes with a rest afternoon in Echternach. Most walkers underestimate the rocky sections around Berdorf.

Can I walk the trail without a car?

Yes. Buses link Luxembourg City with Echternach, Berdorf, Consdorf, Larochette and Beaufort, and public transport is free. Allow 45–60 minutes between villages; some rural lines run only every two hours on Sundays.

Which town is best for a first-time stay?

Echternach. It has the widest choice of hotels, restaurants and buses, and Route 2 starts there. Add one or two nights in Beaufort if you want to walk Route 1 without long daily transfers.
