Where to Stay in Lisbon for Early Airport Departures with a Car

Parking, the Vasco da Gama bridge and realistic drive times decide this one, and the answer is usually not the old town.

Why the historic centre works against you

If you are leaving Lisbon on a 6am flight, the arithmetic matters more than the view. From a hotel in Alfama or Mouraria, a taxi to Humberto Delgado Airport is 15 to 25 minutes at that hour, but loading a car on Rua da Madalena or near the Sé is another ten minutes of tight corners. Parking in those quarters is largely off-street and cramped, and many small guesthouses have none at all. You would be paying for a location you cannot use on your final night.

Chiado and Bairro Alto have the same problem in a smarter wrapper. Garages exist under Praça Luís de Camões and near Rua Garrett, but overnight rates are high and the streets are pedestrianised in parts. A 5am departure means navigating one-way systems before you have had coffee. If the car is a rental you must return, factor in the extra loop to the airport's rental village on the eastern side of the terminal.

Parque das Nações and Oriente: the practical choice

Parque das Nações sits about 5 to 10 minutes from the airport by car, straight along Avenida Dom João II and the Eixo Norte-Sul. The area was rebuilt for Expo 98, so streets are wide, hotel garages are common, and the Oriente station complex has parking beneath it. You are beside the Vasco da Gama shopping centre and the Lisbon Aquarium, and the riverfront gives you a walkable evening. For a last night before a flight with a car, this is where I would book.

Oriente is also the right pick if your trip continues south. From Parque das Nações you are minutes from the Vasco da Gama Bridge and the A12 towards Setúbal and the Algarve, skipping central traffic entirely. The trade-off is atmosphere: it is modern and quiet at night, not tiled alleys. If you want one evening of old Lisbon, do it earlier in the trip and move here for the final night rather than driving across town at dawn.

The airport fringe and the northern axis

The streets immediately around the airport, around Avenida do Rato and the Alvalade and Areeiro neighbourhoods, offer the shortest possible transfer, often under 10 minutes, and easier parking than the centre. Alvalade has wide avenues and a metro connection at Roma and Alvalade stations, so you can still reach the centre in about 15 minutes without the car. It is a residential, workaday area with good local restaurants and few tourists, which is either the point or the drawback.

Further north, Telheiras and the area around Campo Grande and the university campus give you garages and direct access to the Segunda Circular ring road, which feeds the airport and the A1 north. These are not scenic stays. Choose them only if the flight is very early or you arrive late. Note that the Segunda Circular is busy from about 8am, so an early departure is fine but a mid-morning one is not.

Booking, parking and timing

When you book, ask three questions in writing: is parking on site, is it included, and can you leave the car for the whole stay rather than one night. Central Lisbon hotels often charge for garage space per night and some cap the height of vehicles, so check if you have a roof box. Confirm the airport run time with reception and ask them to book a taxi or transfer the evening before; at 5am, taxis do not circulate in every district.

On months, avoid late June and the whole of August if you can. The Festas de Lisboa in June fill the city and July and August bring heat and queues at the airport; May, early June, September and October are easier, with milder temperatures and shorter security lines. Allow two hours before a European flight and three for intercontinental, and remember the terminal is one building, so rental return and check-in are under one roof.

Questions, answered

How long does it take to reach Lisbon airport by car from the centre?

From Chiado or Alfama, roughly 15 to 25 minutes early in the morning via the Eixo Norte-Sul or Avenida Almirante Reis. Add ten minutes for loading luggage on narrow streets and for finding the rental return area.

Is it worth staying near Oriente station before an early flight?

Yes, for a car-based trip. The drive to the terminal is around 5 to 10 minutes, garages are common, and the Vasco da Gama Bridge and A12 are close if you are heading south. It is quiet at night, so plan dinner nearby.

Can I leave my rental car at the hotel during my stay?

Sometimes, but confirm in writing. Many Lisbon hotels have limited garage spaces and some charge per night, with height limits. Ask whether long-stay parking is allowed and whether the rate is per night or per stay.
