Is a Car Worth It in Lisbon? City Days vs Day Trips

Lisbon's hills and toll-heavy motorways make a rental car a costly liability for city days, but a liberating asset for Sintra, Óbidos and the Alentejo coast — here's how to decide.

City Days: Why You Should Skip the Car

Lisbon's historic centre is a maze of one-way streets, restricted-access zones and steep cobbles where a car is more hindrance than help. Parking near Baixa or Chiado can cost €20–30 per day in garages, and free street spots are rare. Traffic on the Avenida da Liberdade and the riverside approaches to Cais do Sodré crawls during rush hour. Trams 28 and 15, the metro's four lines and the ferries from Cais do Sodré cover the city more efficiently. For city days, I would not book a car; rely on Viva Viagem cards and walking instead.

If you are staying in a central hotel, a car will sit idle and eat into your budget. The steep climb to Bairro Alto or Alfama is best done on foot or by tram, and driving there risks fines in pedestrian zones. Even day trips to nearby Belém or LX Factory are easier by tram or train. The only exception is if your hotel offers free parking and you plan to leave the city immediately — but central hotels rarely do. For a typical three-day city break, skip the rental entirely and put the savings towards a better hotel or a fado dinner.

Day Trips: When a Car Pays Off

A car becomes worthwhile for destinations poorly served by public transport. Sintra is reachable by train from Rossio (45 minutes), but having a car lets you visit Pena Palace, Quinta da Regaleira and Cabo da Roca in one day without waiting for buses. The drive from Lisbon to Sintra takes 30–40 minutes via the A37, though parking in the historic centre fills by 10am. For Óbidos, the train from Rossio takes about 80 minutes with a change at Mira Sintra-Meleças, but driving cuts it to 50 minutes via the A8. For both, I would book a car only if you are comfortable with narrow roads and tolls.

Further afield, the Alentejo coast and its beaches — Comporta, Carvalhal, Melides — are a 1.5-hour drive from Lisbon via the A2 and A6, with tolls costing around €10 each way. Buses are infrequent and slow. Similarly, the UNESCO-listed town of Évora is 1.5 hours by car but 2 hours by bus. For wine tasting in the Setúbal Peninsula or exploring the Arrábida hills, a car gives you flexibility. If your trip includes two or more such day trips, renting for those days only makes sense. Book a hotel with parking on the outskirts, like along Avenida dos Estados Unidos da América, to avoid city-centre driving.

Costs and Practicalities

Rental rates in Lisbon start around €20–30 per day for a compact car in low season, but rise to €50–70 in July and August. Add fuel (about €1.70 per litre), tolls (a transponder is essential for the A8, A2 and A6) and parking. Many rental desks are at the airport, so pick up and drop off there to avoid downtown traffic. Insurance often excludes the steep, unpaved roads in some rural areas. Also note that Lisbon's low-emission zone restricts older vehicles. I would compare the total cost against train and bus fares — a return to Sintra by train is under €5.

Book your car only for the days you need it. For instance, pick up at the airport on your way out of the city and return before your last city days. If you are staying in a central hotel, choose one with a car park or use a garage like those at Praça de Espanha or Parque Mayer. For day trips, consider a private driver or small-group tour if you prefer not to drive. Between May and June or September and October, roads are quieter and the weather is pleasant. Avoid August, when the Algarve-bound traffic clogs the A2 and beaches are packed.

Questions, answered

Do I need a car for a 3-day trip to Lisbon?

No. For three days focused on Lisbon's neighbourhoods, trams and metro are enough. Parking is expensive and driving is stressful. Only rent a car for a day trip if you want to see Sintra or Óbidos at your own pace, and book it for that day only.

Is parking easy to find in Lisbon?

Not in the historic centre. Expect paid garages (€20–30 per day) and limited street parking. Hotels with parking are mostly on the outskirts or near the airport. For city days, choose a hotel without parking and use public transport.

What are the best day trips from Lisbon by car?

Sintra (30–40 minutes), Óbidos (50 minutes), Comporta (1.5 hours) and Évora (1.5 hours) are top choices. Each is poorly served by public transport for multiple stops. Rent a car for the day and return it in the evening to avoid city driving.
