Driving to Lisbon's Viewpoints: Which Miradouros Are Reachable

Many of Lisbon's best views come with a climb. Here's which miradouros you can drive to, where to park, and which ones to skip if you're behind the wheel.

The easy drive-up viewpoints

Start with Miradouro da Senhora do Monte in Graça. It's the highest point in the city, and you can drive almost to the gate via Calçada do Monte. There's a small parking area, but spaces are limited on weekends. The view over the castle and Baixa is arguably the best in Lisbon, especially at sunset. Best months are April to June and September to October, when the light is clear and crowds are thinner. Skip it on Sunday afternoons when locals flood the terrace.

Next, Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara in Bairro Alto is reachable by car via Rua da Misericórdia, but parking is a nightmare. Use the underground car park at Praça dos Restauradores and walk five minutes uphill. The view over the castle is lovely, but the terrace gets packed. I'd book it only if you're staying nearby. For a quieter alternative, Miradouro do Torel is a short drive up Calçada do Torel; there's usually street parking, and the view over Avenida da Liberdade is superb.

Miradouro da Graça is another good bet. Drive up to Largo da Graça, where you'll often find a spot along the square. The view from the terrace is classic: castle, rooftops, and the river. It's less crowded than Senhora do Monte, and there's a kiosk for drinks. Arrive before 11am to snag parking. The nearby streets are narrow, so a small car helps. If you're visiting in July or August, come early or late; midday heat and tour groups can spoil it.

For river views, head to Miradouro de Santa Luzia in Alfama. You can drive along Rua do Limoeiro and park near the cathedral, but the streets are tight. Alternatively, use the car park at Campo das Cebolas and walk up. The view over the Tagus and the tiled rooftops is iconic, but the terrace is small. I'd skip driving here on weekends; take a taxi instead. The nearby Miradouro das Portas do Sol is a two-minute walk and has a larger terrace.

When to skip the car

Some miradouros are best left to public transport. Miradouro da Nossa Senhora do Monte, for example, is a steep climb from Graça, and parking is scarce. If you're staying in Baixa, take the 28 tram to Graça and walk. The journey is part of the experience. Similarly, Miradouro de Santa Catarina in Bica is nearly impossible to reach by car; the streets are too narrow. Park at Santos and walk up. The view over the river and Ponte 25 de Abril is worth the effort, but don't attempt it with a rental car.

If you're visiting in winter, note that some viewpoints are exposed and windy. Senhora do Monte can be chilly, so bring a jacket. Also, avoid driving to Miradouro da Graça during the Festas de Lisboa in June; streets close for parties. For a stress-free trip, book a hotel with parking. The Hotel Avenida Palace, near Restauradores, offers parking and is a 10-minute walk to São Pedro de Alcântara. Expect to pay around €150-250 per night. Book well in advance for spring.

Questions, answered

Can you drive to Miradouro da Senhora do Monte?

Yes, you can drive up Calçada do Monte, but parking is limited. There's a small lot near the viewpoint, but it fills quickly. Arrive early or use street parking nearby. The drive is steep but manageable.

Is there parking at Miradouro de São Pedro de Alcântara?

There's no dedicated parking. The nearest is the underground car park at Praça dos Restauradores, a five-minute walk. Street parking is scarce and often restricted. I recommend parking there and walking up.

Which viewpoints are best to visit by car?

Senhora do Monte, Graça, and Torel have the easiest car access with some parking. Avoid Santa Catarina and Santa Luzia if driving; streets are narrow and parking is almost nonexistent. Use public transport for those.
