New Year's Day in Lekki: What Stays Open for Visitors
Lekki runs on its own holiday rhythm on 1 January — some places open early, plenty shut until late afternoon, and a few stay closed altogether.
Plan the day around how Lekki actually moves
New Year's Day in Lekki is a slow-start, late-finish kind of day. Most restaurants in Lekki Phase 1 along Admiralty Way and Fola Osibo reopen for brunch or lunch rather than breakfast, typically from 11am to 1pm, and kitchens stay busy into the evening. Bakeries and small groceries on Bisola Durosinmi-Etti and Emma Abimbola Cole often open briefly in the morning for bread, water and essentials, then close again. Pharmacies are the exception worth checking by phone; a handful around the Ikate roundabout and the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll area keep holiday hours, but you should confirm the day before.
Traffic is the other factor. On 1 January the Lekki-Epe Expressway is unusually light before noon, which makes the run from Ikate to Victoria Island's Landmark area quick. By 3pm, beach-bound cars start stacking toward the Lekki toll gate and the Ajah axis, and the stretch around Ikate Elegushi slows noticeably. If your hotel sits along Admiralty Way or inside the Lekki Phase 1 grid, walking to lunch beats driving. If you are staying closer to Chevron Drive or Lekki County Homes, factor in 20 to 30 minutes to reach the Phase 1 restaurant cluster, and more after mid-afternoon.
Beaches, malls and the places that open anyway
Beach operators on the Elegushi and Okunda stretches generally open on New Year's Day, with gates typically from around 9am and entry bands that vary by operator and season; gate staff quote on arrival and cards are widely accepted, but carry cash as backup. Expect crowds by early afternoon and music from mid-day. Landmark Beach near Oniru opens its leisure and retail areas and is the easiest option for families who want shade, food and parking in one place. If you want a quiet shoreline, go before 11am or skip the beach entirely and use the day for a slow lunch.
The malls are the reliable fallback. Novare Lekki on the Sangotedo end opens on holiday hours, usually from late morning, and its cinema and food court give you somewhere to be when the heat peaks. Circle Mall on Jakande is smaller but handy if you are staying near the First Roundabout. For visitors without a car, ride-hailing works but surge pricing is steep between noon and 6pm; a hotel with a restaurant and a pool is genuinely worth the extra naira on this particular day. Book a Lekki Phase 1 property with an in-house kitchen if you want dinner without a drive.
What to skip, and what I would book
Skip the plan that involves crossing to Victoria Island for a late lunch and returning after dark; the Link Bridge and Ozumba Mbadiwe approach clog up as beach traffic unwinds from 5pm. Skip the informal beach stalls if you are travelling with young children — access paths are uneven and parking is improvised. And skip anything that requires a booked appointment, from a spa to a private tour, unless you confirmed it in writing two days earlier. Many small businesses treat 1 January as a staff rest day regardless of what a social media page says.
For a two- or three-night New Year stay, I would book a mid-range hotel on Admiralty Way or Fola Osibo in Lekki Phase 1: walkable to restaurants, 15 to 25 minutes to Landmark, and close enough to the toll gate that an early airport run is painless. If you are travelling as a family, look at the Sangotedo side near Novare Lekki for space and parking, accepting the longer drive to the beach. Budget travellers should look around Jakande and Ikate, where guesthouses sit near bus routes, though you will rely on ride-hailing on the day itself. Book well before mid-December; demand in Lekki spikes hard for 31 December.
Getting around and paying for things
Cash still matters on 1 January. Card machines work in malls and established restaurants, but smaller vendors, beach gates and roadside stands may be cash-only or have poor network connectivity for transfers. Withdraw before the holiday, not on it. Ride-hailing apps operate throughout Lekki, but driver availability drops in the morning and prices climb from noon; schedule an early trip the night before if you need one. Keke napep and okada fill some gaps in Ikate and Jakande but are best avoided on the expressway itself.
Fuel and power are worth a thought if your hotel is small. Ask whether the property runs a generator through the holiday and whether the restaurant is open for dinner on 1 January — many independent kitchens close early. Confirm check-in time too; some Lekki hotels run reduced front-desk staffing on the day. A short written confirmation by message the day before solves most of this. If your flight lands on 1 January, book a hotel with a 24-hour desk and arrange an airport pickup in advance, since airport transfer drivers are scarce and fares higher than usual.
