Lekki Weekends: When the Traffic Actually Eases

Lagos traffic has a rhythm, and in Lekki the weekend breaks it in predictable ways — here is how to time arrivals, beach runs and bridge crossings so the jams do not eat your trip.

Saturday Morning Is the Sweet Spot

If you are arriving from the mainland, aim to cross the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge or come down the Lekki-Epe Expressway before 8am on Saturday. By 9am the outward crawl toward Ikate, Chevron Drive and the Victoria Garden City gate is already thickening, and by 11am the stretch past the Admiralty Way roundabout can be stop-start for an hour. Hotel check-in desks in Lekki Phase 1 usually open at 2pm, but most will hold bags earlier, so a 7am departure from Ikeja or Yaba gets you breakfast near Fola Osibo Road while the roads are still yours.

Weekday evenings are the mirror image: from about 4pm Friday the expressway fills with people leaving the island, so a Friday-night arrival between 5pm and 8pm is the worst window of the week. If you cannot avoid it, come in via the tolled bridge at Ikoyi and approach Lekki Phase 1 from the northern end rather than joining the expressway at Toll Gate. Budget roughly 45 to 90 minutes for that Friday crossing depending on where you start — the toll is worth it.

Beach Runs: Leave Early, Come Back Early

The Lekki-Epe corridor toward Eleko, Akodo and the Tarkwa Bay boat jetties moves well between 7am and 9.30am on both Saturday and Sunday. Past 10am, the single-carriageway sections around Awoyaya and Bogije become the bottleneck, and the return leg between 4pm and 7pm is the one that ruins evenings. My advice is to treat the beach as a morning trip: leave your Lekki Phase 1 hotel by 7.30am, be on the sand by 9am, and head back before 2pm. That single decision saves most weekend visitors two hours.

For Landmark Beach and the Oniru shoreline, which sit closer to Victoria Island, the calculation is different — that road is busiest from 1pm onward on Sundays, so a late-morning visit ending by noon works better than an afternoon one. Onitsha-bound buses and articulated lorries use the expressway heavily on Sunday afternoons, which is why the outbound crawl toward Lekki toll is often worse than the inbound one. November through February, the dry months, give the clearest roads and the least rain delay.

Where to Base Yourself

Lekki Phase 1, roughly between Admiralty Way and Fola Osibo Road, is the practical choice: restaurants, pharmacies and supermarkets within walking distance, and quick access to the Ikoyi bridge. Ikate and Chevron Drive suit travellers who want quieter streets and are heading to the eastern beaches — Chevron Drive puts you about 20 minutes closer to Awoyaya than Phase 1 does. Victoria Garden City is calm and green but sits behind a gate, so every exit costs time; I would only book there if the estate itself is the point of the trip.

Budget bands in Lekki run from roughly ₦25,000–40,000 for a simple guesthouse room in the Ajah end, ₦45,000–80,000 for a mid-range hotel in Lekki Phase 1, and upwards from there for the serviced apartments and international-standard properties along Admiralty Way. Rates climb sharply in December, when the Detty December crowds arrive, so book three to four weeks ahead for that month. For a first Lekki weekend I would book Phase 1 — you lose a little quiet and gain a lot of time.

Sunday: The Quiet Window

Sunday mornings before 10am are the calmest hours of the Lekki week — church traffic concentrates around specific buildings rather than the whole corridor, and the expressway is genuinely light. This is the best slot for a long breakfast, a walk along the Ozumba Mbadiwe waterfront side of the bridge, or a museum-and-market run into Oniru and back. Many Lekki restaurants open late on Sunday, so confirm hours before you set out; the Lekki Market area is livelier on Saturday than Sunday.

If you are departing for the mainland, leave by 1pm. After 3pm the return traffic builds steadily and the Lekki toll plaza queues lengthen until about 8pm. A Sunday evening flight from Murtala Muhammed means leaving Lekki by 2pm to be safe — call it 60 to 100 minutes depending on where in Lekki you start. Skip the temptation to squeeze in one more beach stop on Sunday afternoon; that is exactly how people miss flights.

Questions, answered

What is the best day and time to arrive in Lekki?

Saturday before 8am is the easiest window, especially from the mainland. Friday between 5pm and 8pm is the worst. If you must arrive Friday evening, use the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge and approach Lekki Phase 1 from the north rather than joining the expressway at Toll Gate.

When should I visit the beaches along the Lekki-Epe corridor?

Leave by 7.30am and return before 2pm on either Saturday or Sunday. The stretch around Awoyaya and Bogije congests after 10am, and the return leg between 4pm and 7pm is the slowest part of the weekend. The dry months from November to February give the most reliable conditions.

Which part of Lekki should I book a hotel in?

Lekki Phase 1 for first visits — walkable amenities and fast bridge access. Chevron Drive if the eastern beaches are your priority, since it is about 20 minutes closer to Awoyaya. Victoria Garden City is quiet but gated, so every trip out costs time. Book three to four weeks ahead for December.
