Lekki in November: a short-break base for Victoria Island days

November's dry, breezy weeks make Lekki a practical base for Victoria Island meetings, markets and marina evenings, with the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge putting both sides of the lagoon within easy reach.

Why base yourself in Lekki rather than on the island

November sits at the front of Lagos's dry season: shorter, sharper rain showers give way to clearer skies, humidity eases slightly and evenings on the Lekki axis become genuinely pleasant. That matters for a short break because you will spend less time waiting out downpours and more time moving between the two sides of the lagoon. The Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge toll plaza is roughly 10 to 15 minutes from most Lekki Phase 1 addresses, and from there Victoria Island is a further 10 to 20 minutes depending on traffic at the Falomo and Awolowo Road junctions.

Stay close to the bridge if Victoria Island is your focus. Lekki Phase 1, especially the streets off Admiralty Way and Fola Osibo, gives you the shortest run to the toll gate and a dense cluster of restaurants and grocery stores within walking distance. The deeper you go towards Ikate, Chevron Drive or Ajah, the cheaper the room rate band tends to be, but you add 20 to 40 minutes each way. For a three- or four-night trip, I would book in Lekki Phase 1 and accept the higher nightly band.

What to actually do with two or three days

Start on the water. Boat operators leave from the Five Cowries Creek jetties on Victoria Island for the Lagos Lagoon and the Lekki shoreline, and a two-hour morning or late-afternoon charter is the single best use of a clear November day; book through your hotel concierge rather than turning up at the jetty. On land, the Lekki Conservation Centre on the Lekki-Epe Expressway opens daily and its canopy walkway takes about 90 minutes including the boardwalk, best attempted before 10am when the heat is still manageable.

For shopping and food, split your time. Lekki Market and the Admiralty Way strip cover everyday needs and casual dining. On Victoria Island, the Palms in Lekki is the largest mall on this side, while the terraces around Adeola Odeku and Akin Adesola streets are where the evening restaurants and rooftop bars concentrate. I would skip the beach run to Landmark unless you have a full afternoon, as traffic on the Ozumba Mbadiwe corridor can double the journey back after 5pm.

Getting around, and when to move

Ride-hailing apps work reliably in Lekki and on Victoria Island, and a cross-lagoon trip is generally affordable outside peak hours. The catch is timing: depart Lekki before 7.30am if you have a morning appointment on the island, and plan the return after 7pm or before 4pm. Between roughly 4.30pm and 6.30pm the Falomo and Lekki toll approaches clog badly, and the Link Bridge itself is no faster than the alternative. Ask your hotel to arrange a driver for a fixed half-day if you have several stops; it usually beats repeated app bookings.

November also brings the start of the harmattan haze later in the month, which softens photographs but can reduce visibility on boat trips. Check the sky before committing to a charter. Rain is not gone entirely; short afternoon downpours are still common in the first half of the month, so keep one indoor option per day. The best weeks for a visit are usually the last two, when the air is drier and evening temperatures are more comfortable.

Where to book, and what to skip

Within Lekki Phase 1 the choice is broad: serviced apartments and boutique hotels along Admiralty Way and Bisola Durosinmi-Etti Drive suit travellers who want quiet and parking, while the larger hotels near the toll gate trade character for reliable backup power, a pool and a business centre. Rates in November climb towards the Christmas peak, so book two to three weeks ahead and confirm whether the quoted rate includes the service charge and the 7.5 per cent value-added tax, which can add meaningfully to the bill.

Skip the temptation to split your stay between Lekki and Victoria Island. The drive is short enough that a single base works, and packing up mid-trip wastes a morning you could spend on the water. Skip the late-night beach excursions on the Lekki-Epe Expressway, which is poorly lit in stretches. If you want one splurge, put it into a lagoon boat charter rather than an upgraded room; the view of the skyline from the water is the memory you will keep.

Questions, answered

How long does it take to get from Lekki to Victoria Island?

From Lekki Phase 1 via the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, expect 20 to 35 minutes outside peak hours. Allow 45 to 60 minutes between 7am and 9am, and again from 4.30pm to 6.30pm, when the Falomo and toll approaches are busiest.

Is November a good month to visit Lekki?

Yes. The rains ease, evenings become more comfortable and the second half of the month is usually the driest. Short afternoon showers are still possible early in November, so keep an indoor option in reserve and check conditions before booking a boat trip.

Do I need a car in Lekki?

Not necessarily. Ride-hailing apps cover Lekki and Victoria Island well. For a day with several stops, a hotel-arranged driver for a half-day is often more efficient and avoids repeated app waits during peak traffic.
