Ikeja vs Victoria Island: Which Area to Choose for a Lekki Trip
Lekki sits on the eastern side of Lagos, so the real question is whether to land near the airport at Ikeja or base yourself on Victoria Island and drive out to the Lekki corridor.
Where each area actually sits
Ikeja is mainland Lagos, wrapped around Murtala Muhammed International Airport and the domestic terminal at Ikeja, with the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway and Ikorodu Road feeding the rest of the state. From Ikeja, the Lekki toll gate is roughly 25 to 40 kilometres depending on your route, which translates to anywhere from 90 minutes to three hours in traffic. Victoria Island is a different calculation: the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge puts you minutes from Ikoyi, and the Lekki-Epe Expressway runs straight out through Lekki Phase 1, Admiralty Way, and the Lekki toll gate toward Ajah.
That geography decides most of the trip. If your stay is about Lekki itself — a wedding in Lekki Phase 1, a conference at Landmark, a short let off Admiralty Way — then Victoria Island keeps you on the right side of the water. Ikeja only makes sense if the airport is the anchor of your itinerary, or if you are arriving on a late-night flight and want a short transfer to a bed.
Traffic, drive times and the bridge
Lagos traffic is the single biggest cost of choosing wrong. Ikeja to Lekki Phase 1 on a weekday morning can swallow two to three hours via the Third Mainland Bridge or the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge, and the return leg on a Friday evening is worse. Victoria Island to Lekki Phase 1 is usually 20 to 45 minutes outside peak hours, and the toll on the Link Bridge is a small, manageable trade for that. If you are crossing during rush hour, both routes hurt, but Victoria Island's is a shorter hurt.
Plan around the rush rather than through it. Weekend mornings are the easiest window for any cross-city movement. If your Lekki event is on a Saturday, Ikeja becomes less punishing. If it is a weekday, staying on the island side will save you two or three hours of your life per day, and that is usually the deciding factor.
What you get for your money
Ikeja's hotel stock is broad and leans business-oriented around Allen Avenue, Opebi Road and the airport axis, with a lot of mid-range rooms and easy access to Shoprite Ikeja City Mall, the Lagos State Secretariat and Maryland Mall. Victoria Island is pricier per night and the rooms are often smaller, but you are paying for location: Adeola Odeku Street, Akin Adesola Street, Ligali Ayorinde and nearby Oniru put you close to Landmark Beach, the Eko Hotel area, restaurants on Ozumba Mbadiwe and a short hop to Lekki. Oniru and Victoria Island's hotel belt are the practical pick for a Lekki-centred trip.
For a Lekki-focused stay, I would book Victoria Island, Oniru, or a short let in Lekki Phase 1 itself rather than Ikeja. Ikeja wins only if your first and last days are dominated by flights, and even then a single airport-adjacent night at the start or end of the trip is smarter than basing the whole stay there. If you must stay in Ikeja, keep it to one night and move.
Timing, weather and what to skip
Lagos has a wet season roughly April to July and a shorter one in September to October, with the driest, most comfortable months from November to February. December is peak: prices rise, beaches such as Landmark and Elegushi fill up, and the roads near Lekki and Victoria Island get heavier. Book well ahead for December and January. If your schedule is flexible, late January and February are excellent value, with clearer weather and less crowding on the Lekki-Epe Expressway.
What to skip: do not book Ikeja purely because it is cheaper, then commute to Lekki daily. Do not assume the Lekki-Ikoyi Link Bridge avoids all traffic — it helps, it does not erase rush hour. Skip late-afternoon cross-city drives if you can, and avoid scheduling tight connections between an airport arrival and a Lekki evening event. Base yourself on the island side for anything Lekki-centred, and treat Ikeja as an airport stop, not a holiday base.
