Getting to Kolkata: By Road, Bus and Air

How to reach Kolkata by plane, train-linked bus terminals and the highway network, with the arrival details that decide where you sleep.

Arriving by Air at Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International

Kolkata's airport sits in Dum Dum, roughly 15 km northeast of the central business district around BBD Bagh and about 12 km from Park Street. Prepaid taxis and app cabs queue outside the integrated terminal; the ride to Sudder Street or Park Street usually takes 35–55 minutes outside rush hour, longer if you land between 5pm and 8pm. The airport is also on the Blue Line metro extension, which is the cheapest way in if you pack light and your hotel is near an Esplanade or Kalighat station stop.

Most international arrivals land late at night, so pick a hotel in Park Street, Sudder Street or New Market rather than Salt Lake or Rajarhat. Those eastern business districts are convenient for offices and the convention centre but quiet after dark, with fewer places to eat within walking distance. If your flight reaches after midnight, book the first night in advance; walk-in rates at the airport belt are rarely better and you will be tired enough to accept them.

Trains, Buses and the Long-Distance Road Network

Kolkata is the eastern terminus for long-distance rail, and the two main stations matter for hotel choice. Howrah, across the Hooghly, handles most trains from Delhi, Mumbai and the south, and is a 20–30 minute taxi ride to central hotels over the Howrah Bridge. Sealdah, on the city side, serves the suburban and eastern lines and is closer to Sudder Street and the New Market area. If you arrive at Howrah at a peak hour, the bridge traffic can double your journey, so allow an hour before any onward plan.

By road, the main approaches are the NH-19 from Durgapur and Asansol, the NH-16 from Kharagpur and the south, and the NH-12 from the north. Private buses and state-run services run from Esplanade and Babughat, with the larger intercity bus terminals at Howrah and Salt Lake. Buses from Digha, Bakkhali and the Sundarbans gateway at Godkhali are frequent in winter but slower and less predictable in the monsoon months from June to September.

Which Arrival Point Suits Which Hotel Area

If you are coming by plane and staying two or three nights, I would book around Park Street or Sudder Street: you can walk to the Indian Museum, the Victoria Memorial approach and the New Market, and taxis are easy to find. Mid-range rooms in this belt sit in a broad band that suits most city breaks, and the area stays active in the evening. Salt Lake suits travellers with business in the IT sector or a flight at an awkward hour, not first-time sightseers.

If you arrive at Howrah, staying in the BBD Bagh and Esplanade belt cuts a crossing of the river out of your first morning. If you are heading to the Sundarbans, spend the night near Babughat or in the south of the city and leave early; the drive to Godkhali takes around two and a half hours. Skip hotels far out on the EM Bypass unless you have a car, since the metro does not reach much of it.

Timing the Trip and Booking Ahead

October to March is the comfortable window, and December brings both the best weather and the highest demand around Park Street and the Maidan. Book three to four weeks ahead for that period, and expect the Durga Puja weeks in autumn to fill central hotels quickly. April and May are hot and humid, the monsoon runs from June into September, and the cheapest room rates fall in those months if you can handle the weather and the occasional flooded street.

Allow an hour more than a map suggests for any cross-city trip during office hours, and keep small notes for auto-rickshaw and bus fares. For a first visit, I would book a hotel between Park Street and Sudder Street, arrive by air if the budget allows, and use the metro for the Kalighat and Esplanade runs. Book the room before you book the train; central availability tightens first.

Questions, answered

How far is Kolkata airport from the city centre?

About 15 km from BBD Bagh and roughly 12 km from Park Street. Allow 35–55 minutes by taxi outside peak hours, and up to an hour and a half during evening rush. The Blue Line metro is the cheapest alternative if your hotel is near a station.

Which station should I use, Howrah or Sealdah?

Howrah handles most long-distance trains from Delhi, Mumbai and the south, and sits across the river; Sealdah serves eastern and suburban lines and is closer to central hotels. Choose your hotel by arrival station to avoid crossing the Howrah Bridge at peak hours.

When is the best time to visit Kolkata?

October to March is comfortable, with December the busiest and priciest around Park Street and the Maidan. Book three to four weeks ahead for that window. April and May are hot, and the monsoon from June to September brings lower rates and heavier traffic.
