Wayanad in October: Routes, Walks and Where to Base

October is when Wayanad dries out after the southwest monsoon, and the choice of base town decides how much of the district you actually see.

Getting in: three routes and what each one costs you

Most travellers reach Wayanad from Kozhikode, and the climb through Thamarassery churam on NH766 is the shortest option: roughly 70 km to Kalpetta, about two hours if the ghat traffic behaves. The nine hairpin bends are slow on weekends and during school-run hours, so leave Kozhikode before eight in the morning. Buses on this route are frequent and cheap; a hired car is the sensible choice if you are carrying luggage for a week. Coming from Mysore or Bengaluru, the road via Sulthan Bathery is longer but flatter and easier on the stomach.

From Kochi or Thrissur, the usual approach is via Palakkad and Mannarkkad up to Mananthavady, or the longer loop through Nilambur. The Palakkad route is scenic but narrow in stretches and best driven in daylight; figure on five to six hours from Kochi with a stop. The nearest railheads are Kozhikode and Nilambur Road, and the nearest airports are Kozhikode and Kannur. If you are flying in and out on different days, open-jaw tickets between Kozhikode and Kannur save a half-day of backtracking.

Walks worth planning around

Chembra Peak, south of Kalpetta near Meppadi, is the district's signature trek, and October is close to ideal: the grass is green, the leeches are receding and the heart-shaped lake is usually full. Permits are limited daily and issued at the forest office, so go early and expect a five to six hour round trip. For something gentler, the heritage loop around Edakkal Caves near Ambalavayal pairs a short steep climb with Neolithic carvings, and you can add the nearby Ambukuthi mala viewpoint in the same morning.

Coffee and cardamom estates around Vythiri and Meppadi offer guided walks that suit families and anyone not wanting a serious climb. For birdlife, the Tholpetty range near the Karnataka border and the swampy margins of Pookode Lake reward an early start with binoculars. Skip the Pakshipathalam trek unless you have a full day, a guide and reasonable fitness; the cave section is demanding and the forest department's rules on group size are strict. Carry a light rain shell regardless: October still throws afternoon showers.

Where to base, and why I would pick Kalpetta

Wayanad is a district, not a town, and the three main bases serve different trips. Kalpetta sits at the centre, with the best spread of hotels, restaurants and transport links, and puts Chembra, Pookode and the Meppadi estates within an hour's drive. Vythiri, about 12 km south, is greener and quieter, popular for resort stays with estate views, but you will drive for dinner unless you eat at your hotel. Sulthan Bathery in the east suits Edakkal, the Jain temple remains and the road to Mysore.

For a first visit of three or four nights I would book Kalpetta and day-trip outwards, because it keeps your evenings flexible and your drives short. Choose Vythiri if the stay itself is the point and you want cool mornings on a verandah. Mananthavady, in the north, works for Tholpetty and the Kuruva islands but is thin on dining. Mid-range rooms cluster in Kalpetta and Vythiri; rates rise sharply in the last week of December and during the school holidays, while October remains comfortable and comparatively quiet.

Practicalities for an October stay

October marks the shift from monsoon to the northeast monsoon, so mornings are usually clear and rain arrives in bursts. Pack quick-dry clothing, a fleece for Kalpetta's evenings and footwear with grip for wet laterite paths. Roads inside the district are winding; a two-hour drive between Kalpetta and Mananthavady is normal, and night driving is best avoided because of unlit bends and wildlife crossings near the sanctuaries. Fuel up in Kalpetta or Sulthan Bathery before heading into the hills.

Book accommodation two to three weeks ahead for October weekends, and confirm whether your hotel is up a steep estate track; some hill properties are unsuitable for low-clearance cars. Combine Wayanad with Kozhikode for the coast and the food, or with Kannur for theyyam season later in the year. If your trip starts in Thrissur or Thiruvananthapuram, allow a full travel day each way and treat Wayanad as a three-night block rather than a day trip from the coast.

Questions, answered

Do I need permits for the Chembra Peak trek?

Yes. Permits are issued by the forest department office near Meppadi, usually on the day, with a daily cap on walkers. Arrive early, carry ID and expect a five to six hour round trip. Closed footwear and water are essential.

Is October a good month for Wayanad weather?

Generally yes. The southwest monsoon has ended, mornings are often clear and the landscape is still green. Expect short afternoon showers, cooler evenings in Kalpetta and Vythiri, and few of the crowds that arrive in December.

How many nights should I spend in Wayanad?

Three nights is a fair minimum if you want one trek, Edakkal Caves and an estate walk without rushing. Four nights lets you add Tholpetty or a slow day in Vythiri. Two nights only works if you are based centrally in Kalpetta.
