Kerala in October: Hills or Coast?
October splits Kerala in two: the high ranges are drying out while the coast is still in the tail of the southwest monsoon, so the right choice depends on how much rain you will tolerate.
Getting Around and What to Book First
Distances are shorter than they look on the map. Kochi to Munnar is about 130 kilometres and four hours; Kochi to Alappuzha is 55 kilometres and an hour and a half on the national highway; Thiruvananthapuram to Varkala is 50 kilometres, roughly an hour. Trains on the coastal line are frequent and comfortable for the Alappuzha and Varkala legs, while the hill stretches are road-only and best done with a driver who knows the hairpins. Book hill accommodation first, since October inventory in Munnar and Vythiri is limited and the good small properties fill early.
Coastal hotels can safely be booked a week or two out, because supply is larger and cancellations are common in the shoulder month. If you are comparing towns, note that demand this season is concentrated in Kerala's cities and temple towns, Thrissur, Thiruvananthapuram and Malappuram among them, so city hotels near the Vadakkunnathan temple or the Padmanabhaswamy temple area can be busier than expected on festival and weekend dates. Decide on hills or coast, then lock the room that matters and leave the rest loose.
Questions, answered
Is October a good month for a Kerala houseboat?
It works, but expect brief showers and high humidity. Ask whether the boat has open or covered upper deck seating, and prefer a shorter one-night cruise out of Alappuzha rather than a long loop, so you are not committed to hours on the water in rain.
How many days should I give Munnar in October?
Two nights is enough for the tea estates and a viewpoint or two, three if you want a longer plantation walk. Add a day if you are driving from Kochi, since the Adimali ghat section is slow and you will not want to arrive after dark.
Hills or coast for a first trip to Kerala?
Split them. Two nights in Fort Kochi and two in Munnar gives you backwaters, heritage streets and hill scenery, and means a wet afternoon never ruins the whole trip. Pure beach itineraries are better saved for December to February.
