Getting Around Wayanad: Roads, Local Transport and Walks
Wayanad's hill roads reward planning: here's how to move between Kalpetta, Vythiri, Mananthavady and Sultan Bathery without wasting daylight.
Arriving and the main road network
Most travellers reach Wayanad by road from Kozhikode (about 72 km to Kalpetta, roughly 2.5 hours) or from Mysuru (around 110 km to Sultan Bathery, 2.5–3 hours). The NH766 corridor via Adivaram and Thamarassery connects Kozhikode to Kalpetta; the nine-hairpin Thamarassery ghat section is scenic but slow, so add 30 minutes in the monsoon. From Bengaluru, the drive via Mysuru and Gundlupet takes 5.5–6 hours. Buses from Kozhikode and Mysuru run frequently to Kalpetta and Sultan Bathery; KSRTC operates both ordinary and fast services. If you are flying, Kannur and Kozhikode are the closest airports, each about 2.5–3 hours from Kalpetta by taxi.
Wayanad's three main towns—Kalpetta, Mananthavady and Sultan Bathery—form a rough triangle, and most sights sit off the connecting roads. Kalpetta is the administrative hub and a practical base for Chembra Peak and Pookode Lake. Vythiri, 12 km south, is greener and quieter. Sultan Bathery suits Edakkal Caves and the Jain temple. Mananthavady is best for Thirunelli and Kuruva Island. Distances are short on paper: Kalpetta to Sultan Bathery is 32 km (about 50 minutes), Kalpetta to Mananthavady is 38 km (about 1 hour 10 minutes). Bumpy surfaces and ghat traffic can stretch those times.
Taxis, autos and buses
Taxis are the most flexible option but not cheap: expect ₹1,300–₹2,000 for a Kalpetta–Sultan Bathery round trip depending on vehicle and bargaining. Autos are cheaper for short hops within towns (₹100–₹200 for 3–5 km), but they are not metered, so agree the fare first. App-based cabs like Ola and Uber have limited presence; you will mostly rely on local taxi stands or your hotel's arranged transport. For airport transfers, pre-book through your hotel—walk-in taxis at Kozhikode airport often quote higher for hill destinations.
KSRTC buses are the budget backbone. Frequent services link Kalpetta, Sultan Bathery and Mananthavady, with fares around ₹30–₹70 for these inter-town hops. Buses are basic but reliable; morning departures are less crowded. Private buses also run on some routes. For sightseeing, however, buses drop you on the main road, and the last mile to places like Soochipara Falls or Kuruva Island often needs an auto or a long walk. If you plan to cover three or four sights in a day, a hired car with driver (₹2,500–₹3,500 for a full day) works out simpler than piecing together buses.
Walking and local exploring
Wayanad's hill roads are not pedestrian-friendly in the way town centres are: narrow shoulders, blind curves and fast buses mean walking between villages is rarely pleasant. That said, walks within settlements and around tea and coffee estates are rewarding. In Kalpetta, the area around the main bus stand is walkable; in Vythiri, the lane towards Pookode Lake (about 3 km) is a gentle uphill stroll. Sultan Bathery's old Jain temple and the surrounding market streets are best explored on foot. For anything longer, arrange a drop-off and walk back downhill.
Guided treks are the exception: Chembra Peak (permit required, closed during monsoon) and the trails around Thirunelli offer proper hiking with local guides. Do not attempt to walk along the Thamarassery ghat road—use a vehicle. In the monsoon months from June to August, leeches and slippery paths make forest walks unwise; December to February is the best window for both road trips and short walks. If you want a base that balances road access with walkable surroundings, I would book in Vythiri for a quieter stay or Kalpetta for convenience. Sultan Bathery is worth a night if Edakkal is your priority.
Questions, answered
Do I need a car in Wayanad?
Not strictly, but a car or taxi makes sightseeing much easier. Buses connect main towns cheaply, yet many attractions are off the main road. For two or more people, a hired car per day is often more practical.
How do I get from Kozhikode airport to Wayanad?
Pre-book a taxi through your hotel or a local operator; expect 2.5–3 hours to Kalpetta. KSRTC buses from Kozhikode also serve Kalpetta, but the journey is slower and less direct from the airport.
When is the best time to visit Wayanad for walks?
December to February offers dry, cool weather ideal for short walks and treks. Avoid June to August for forest trails due to heavy rain and leeches. March to May is warmer but still manageable.
