Getting Around Thiruvananthapuram: Auto, Bus, Train and Ferry Without the Guesswork
How to move between the airport, Kovalam, the railway station and the backwaters — with real fares, timings and the one option most visitors skip.
From the airport and the two railway stations
Thiruvananthapuram International Airport sits at Chakka, about 6 km from Kovalam and 8 km from the Central railway station. A prepaid auto to Kovalam runs roughly ₹350–450; a taxi ₹700–900. City buses stop on the airport approach road, not at arrivals, so with luggage the prepaid counter inside the terminal is the honest choice. Thiruvananthapuram Central (TVC) is the main station for long-distance trains, while Kochuveli, 7 km north, handles many Kerala-bound services — check which one your ticket names before booking a hotel nearby.
For Kollam, the train is the clear winner: 65 km in about 1 hour 15 minutes on the Vanchinad or Jan Shatabdi, against 2 hours by road on NH66. Kollam Junction is also the terminus for the Kollam–Alappuzha backwater ferry, a slow 8-hour run through Ashtamudi Lake that most travellers never consider. If you are heading north to Alappuzha by rail, trains take about 1 hour 30 minutes; the parallel road route via Kayamkulam is slower and less scenic.
Autos, buses and the KSRTC network
Autos in the city run on the meter in theory and by negotiation in practice. Expect ₹100–150 for a 5 km hop such as Central station to Museum Road, and ₹180–250 for the 8 km to Shangumugham beach. Uber and Ola both operate, with short rides often ₹80–130, but surge pricing after 9 pm at Kovalam is real. Kerala's KSRTC buses are cheap and frequent: city services from East Fort and Thampanoor cover Padmanabhaswamy Temple, Veli and Kovalam for under ₹30.
For longer hops, KSRTC runs comfortable low-floor services from the Central Bus Station at Thampanoor. Kollam is about ₹85 and 1 hour 45 minutes; Alappuzha roughly ₹130 and 3 hours; Thrissur around ₹230 and 5 hours on a fast passenger. Book KSRTC online or via the app if you want a specific departure — walk-up seats vanish on Sunday evenings and during the Sabarimala season from November to January. For Kanyakumari, 87 km south, the train beats the bus on both comfort and time.
Kovalam, Varkala and the coastal run
The city-to-Kovalam stretch along Kovalam Road is 16 km and takes 30–40 minutes outside peak hours, closer to an hour on weekday mornings. Local buses from Thampanoor run every 15 minutes and cost around ₹20; an auto is ₹350–450 one way. Varkala, 50 km north, is best reached by train — about 50 minutes to Varkala Sivagiri station, then a ₹100 auto to the North Cliff.
Poovar, 30 km south, has no train and thin bus service; a day-return taxi at ₹1,500–2,000 is the practical move, often bundled with a backwater boat trip. Skip the two-hour Kovalam–Poovar road crawl on weekends if you can — leave before 4 pm. For beach-hopping, base yourself in Thiruvananthapuram city for the temple and museum days, then shift to Kovalam or Varkala for two nights rather than commuting daily.
Where to stay for easy transport
Thampanoor, around the Central station and bus stand, is the most connected neighbourhood: walk to both terminals, autos on every corner, and rooms from ₹1,200 to ₹3,500. It is noisy and not pretty. For a quieter base with restaurants and the Napier Museum nearby, Vazhuthacaud and Palayam are better, with rooms ₹2,000–5,500 and quick auto access to everything.
Kovalam suits beach-focused trips with easy airport access, but you will auto into the city for temple days, about ₹400 each way. I would book Thampanoor or Palayam for a two-night city stop, then move to Kovalam or Varkala for the beach leg rather than paying for a single hotel you barely use. Best months are November to February; the monsoon from June to August brings cheaper rooms and rough seas on the Kovalam coast.
Questions, answered
Is it easy to get around Thiruvananthapuram without a car?
Yes. Autos, app cabs and KSRTC buses cover the city and coast, and trains link Kollam, Alappuzha and Varkala quickly. Only Poovar and quieter backwater spots need a hired taxi.
How much does an auto from Thiruvananthapuram airport to Kovalam cost?
Expect roughly ₹350–450 by prepaid auto and ₹700–900 by taxi, for the 6 km run. Use the prepaid counter inside arrivals rather than agreeing a fare on the kerb.
Should I stay near the railway station or at Kovalam?
Thampanoor or Palayam suits sightseeing, with rooms from ₹1,200–5,500 and quick transport links. Kovalam suits beach time. Splitting the stay between both works better than commuting.
