Sohna Road or Palam Vihar? Choosing Where to Stay in Gurugram

Two very different bases south-west of Delhi: a fast-growing corridor of malls and offices, or an established residential pocket near the airport.

What each area actually is

Sohna Road runs south from the Sector 55–56 junction towards Badshahpur and on to Sohna, and it is Gurugram's busiest growth corridor. The stretch between Rajiv Chowk and Subhash Chowk carries most of the new-build hotels, malls such as Omaxe City Centre and World Street by Omaxe, and a wall of corporate campuses behind them. Almost everything is on the main carriageway or one turn off it, so getting to a meeting or a restaurant is simple. Traffic builds sharply after 6pm and again from 8.30am, and the road handles it badly.

Palam Vihar is a planned residential sector west of the railway line, laid out in blocks around a central market area near Ansal Plaza. It feels like a neighbourhood rather than a strip: houses, schools, local eateries and a handful of mid-range hotels tucked into the blocks. There is no mall cluster and no office corridor in walking distance, but the roads are quieter and the airport is much closer. Use Palam Vihar for slow mornings; use Sohna Road for everything else.

Getting around, and what it costs

From Palam Vihar, Terminal 3 at Indira Gandhi International is roughly 12 to 15 km via the Dwarka Expressway or the Old Delhi–Gurgaon Road, typically 20 to 30 minutes outside peak hours. Sohna Road to T3 is 22 to 26 km and 40 to 55 minutes, often longer on a Monday morning. Both areas are served by app-based taxis and auto-rickshaws; Palam Vihar has the edge that the Rapid Metro's Sector 55–56 station on Golf Course Road is a short ride away and the airport is behind you rather than across the city.

Room rates follow the same split. Sohna Road carries the wider spread, from budget business hotels on the Badshahpur stretch to four-star towers near Rajiv Chowk, with weekend rates dipping because the weekday corporate trade is the main market. Palam Vihar's inventory is smaller and mostly three-star and serviced apartments, which suits longer stays where you want a kitchenette. Neither area is cheap by Indian standards; you are paying for the proximity to offices and the airport. Book Sohna Road for a short work trip, Palam Vihar if you land late or fly out early.

Character, food and time of year

Sohna Road's dining is mall-based and dependable rather than distinctive: food courts at Omaxe and World Street, a cluster of cafés around Sector 49, and hotel restaurants that do a solid buffet. It is convenient if you are travelling with colleagues. Palam Vihar eats better at the local level: small kitchens in the blocks around the central market serving parathas, chaat and north Indian thalis, plus a few family restaurants near Ansal Plaza. If your idea of a good evening is a two-kilometre walk and a cheap, excellent meal, Palam Vihar wins comfortably.

The best months for either are October to early March, when days sit in the low twenties and evenings need a light jacket. April to June is punishing — 40°C and above — and hotel pools are usable only early in the morning. July to September brings the monsoon, short but heavy downpours and slower traffic on Sohna Road. February can be hazy, so do not plan on clear views. If you are visiting for a wedding or a corporate event, check the calendar first; both areas fill up and rates climb.

Which I would book

For a three- to five-night trip built around meetings, I would book Sohna Road near Rajiv Chowk or Sector 49. You can walk to food and a mall, reach Cyber City and Golf Course Road without crossing the whole city, and there are enough hotels that prices stay competitive. Choose a room away from the main carriageway; the traffic noise at night is real. Skip Sohna Road for a one-night airport stop — the transfer eats your evening.

For early flights, a family visit, or a stay beyond four days, Palam Vihar is the better call. It is quieter, closer to T3 and cheaper for the same standard, and the neighbourhood food is more interesting. What it lacks is gloss and late-night options; the area winds down early. A sensible compromise for a mixed-purpose trip is to split the stay: two nights near Sohna Road for work, the final night in Palam Vihar before your flight, which removes the early-morning panic without moving house twice.

Questions, answered

How far is Sohna Road from Indira Gandhi International Airport?

Roughly 22 to 26 km to Terminal 3, which translates to 40 to 55 minutes outside peak traffic and noticeably longer between 8am and 10am or after 6pm.

Is Palam Vihar a good base without a car?

Yes, if your days are local. The central market, eateries and shops are walkable, app-based taxis are readily available, and the airport is a short ride. You will rely on taxis for Cyber City and Sohna Road though.

When is the best time to stay in Gurugram?

October to early March for comfortable temperatures. Avoid late April to June, when highs exceed 40°C, and allow extra transfer time in July and August, when monsoon rain slows traffic on Sohna Road.
