Ghana in November: Events, Weather and Where to Stay

November brings Ghana's driest, clearest skies to the coast and the busiest stretch of the year in Cape Coast.

Why November Works on the Coast

November sits at the front of Ghana's dry season, and the effect is most obvious along the coast. In Cape Coast, daytime temperatures hover around 30°C and the heavy June-to-September rains have passed, so the castle ramparts, the palm-lined paths at Kakum National Park and the beaches at Brenu Akyinim are all comfortably walkable. Hotel rates begin their climb toward the December peak but are still lower than Christmas week. Book three to four weeks ahead if you want a room near the Cape Coast Castle end of town, where the walkable historic quarter sits.

Cape Coast is currently the strongest area of demand on our site, and that tracks with what the city offers in November. The Fetu Afahye festival falls earlier in the year, so November visitors get the heritage sites without the festival crowds. Expect two to three hours for Cape Coast Castle, then a separate half-day for Kakum's canopy walkway, about 30 minutes by road inland. Elmina, 20 minutes west along the coast road, pairs well with a second night.

Cape Coast: Where to Base Yourself

The town splits into two useful bases. The old quarter around Cape Coast Castle and Kotokuraba Road puts you within walking distance of the castle, the Centre for National Culture and the fishing harbour, and it suits travellers without a car. Hotels here are mostly small guesthouses and mid-range properties in the 300–700 cedi band per night. The second option is the beach strip toward Brenu Akyinim, 25 to 30 minutes west of the centre, where larger resort-style hotels sit behind the sand. You will want a car or a hired taxi for that, roughly 80–150 cedi a day.

I would book the old quarter for a first visit of two nights and save the beach for a lazy final day. Check-in times at Cape Coast properties are usually mid-afternoon, so if you arrive on a morning bus from Accra, leave your bags and walk to the castle first. The STC and VIP buses from Accra's Kaneshie or Circle stations take about three hours; trotros are cheaper but slower and less predictable with luggage. Book your room before you travel, because November weekends fill quickly with Accra day-trippers.

Accra and Kumasi in November

Most international flights land at Kotoka International in Accra, and a night there is worth budgeting for. The city's cultural calendar slows in November after the year's bigger events, but the Independence Arch, Jamestown's lighthouse and the Arts Centre craft market remain open. Base in Osu or Cantonments for restaurants and walkability; East Legon suits travellers with a car. Central Accra hotels run roughly 400–900 cedi for mid-range, and airport-area properties cost more. Allow 45 minutes to an hour from the airport to Osu in traffic, longer on Friday evenings.

Kumasi, four to five hours north by road or 40 minutes by domestic flight, adds the Ashanti heritage layer: the Manhyia Palace Museum, the Prempeh II Jubilee Museum and the sprawling Kejetia Market. November rain is lighter than in June, which makes the drive to Lake Bosomtwe, about an hour south of the city, more reliable. Two nights in Kumasi is enough. If your time is tight, fly up and take the bus back, which lets you see the forest belt between Kumasi and Nkawkaw.

Practical Timing and What to Skip

November daylight is steady, with sunrise around 5.50am and sunset near 5.45pm, so plan outdoor sights for the morning before the heat peaks. The harmattan dust usually arrives in December and January, not November, so skies stay clear. Bring light long sleeves for evening mosquitoes and reef-safe sun protection for the coast. Cash remains king outside Accra's malls; ATMs in Cape Coast and Kumasi can run dry at weekends, so withdraw on weekdays. Carry small notes for trotros and market purchases.

Skip the temptation to do Accra, Cape Coast and Kumasi in four days. The road time alone will eat half your trip. A sensible November route is two nights in Accra, two in Cape Coast with a day trip to Elmina, and two in Kumasi, flying the last leg back to Accra if your flight home allows. If you only have a week and want beach time, drop Kumasi and take the coastal road west from Cape Coast toward Axim, where November seas are calm enough for swimming.

Questions, answered

Is November a good month to visit Ghana?

Yes. The heavy rains have ended on the coast, skies are clear before the harmattan dust arrives, and hotel rates are lower than in December. Cape Coast and Accra are both comfortable for walking and sightseeing, with daytime temperatures around 30°C.

How do I get from Accra to Cape Coast?

Air-conditioned STC and VIP buses leave from Kaneshie and Circle stations and take about three hours. Trotros are cheaper but slower with luggage. A private car with driver takes roughly the same time and lets you stop at Elmina on the way.

Should I book hotels in advance for November?

Book at least three to four weeks ahead, particularly in Cape Coast, where demand from Accra weekenders is strong and the choice of small central guesthouses is limited. Beach properties west of town also fill on weekends, and Christmas week rates start to apply from late November.
