Family Travel in Ghana: Where to Base Yourself and What to Skip

Practical advice for travelling Ghana with children, from the beaches of Cape Coast to the hills above Accra.

Why Cape Coast Works Best for Families

Cape Coast is the most searched destination in Ghana for good reason: it is compact, walkable in the old town and has the country's strongest cluster of family-friendly sights within a short drive. Kakum National Park, about 30 to 40 minutes north by road, runs its canopy walkway early, so arrive before 9am to avoid heat and crowds. The castle and the old town sit right by the sea. Two to three days here is a sensible family stay, and the town centre or the beach road towards Pedu are the easiest bases with children.

Kakum's canopy walkway is a series of rope bridges above the forest floor. Older children usually love it; very young children may find the sway unsettling, and there is a minimum height for the walk. Pair it with a guided ground-level walk instead if your group is mixed. Afternoons are best spent on the beach or resting out of the midday sun. Cape Coast's weather runs dry from roughly November to February, with the heaviest rains between May and June.

Accra: Choose Your Neighbourhood Carefully

Accra is where most international flights land, so families usually spend a first or last night here. For children, the eastern suburbs work best: Osu and Labone are central with restaurants and pharmacies nearby, while East Legon and Airport Residential give more space and quieter streets, at a higher price band. Avoid basing yourself in the dense market areas of central Accra with small children; traffic alone can eat an hour between short distances, particularly between 7am and 9am and again from 4pm.

The Coast Beyond Cape Coast

West of Cape Coast, Elmina is a short 15 to 20 minute drive and is easily combined into the same stay. The castle and the fishing harbour are the draw. Further west, Busua and the beaches around Axim suit families who want calm water and a slower pace; the drive from Cape Coast is around three hours, so it works as a separate stop rather than a day trip. East of Accra, Ada Foah at the Volta estuary offers boat trips and birdlife, about two to two and a half hours by road, and is popular with families for a weekend.

Getting Around and Practical Points

A private car with a driver is the simplest way to move a family around; agree days and destinations in advance rather than relying on shared taxis. Roads between the main coastal towns are generally in decent condition, but journeys are slower than distances suggest. Carry water, sun hats and snacks, and plan one main activity per day with younger children. For a first family trip, I would book two or three nights in Cape Coast as the anchor, add a night in Accra near the airport at the end, and skip the long western drive unless you have at least a week.

Questions, answered

When is the best time to visit Ghana with children?

The dry months from roughly November to February are easiest for families, with less rain and more reliable road conditions. March and April are hot but manageable. The heaviest rains fall between May and June and again in September and October, when outdoor plans such as the Kakum canopy walk may need flexibility.

How many days should a family spend in Cape Coast?

Two to three nights covers the castle, the old town and Kakum National Park comfortably without rushing children. Add an extra night if you want a full beach day or a trip to Elmina. Cape Coast also works well as a base for exploring the wider central coast by private car.

Is Kakum National Park suitable for young children?

The canopy walkway involves rope bridges with some sway and a height requirement, which suits older children better. Families with toddlers can take a ground-level guided forest walk instead. Visit early in the morning, before 9am, when temperatures are lower and the walkway is quieter.
