Family Travel in Ghana: Kid-Friendly Stays and Days Out
Practical planning for families heading to Ghana, from Cape Coast's castles and beaches to Accra's museums and the Volta Region's waterfalls.
Start with Cape Coast, where families are searching
Cape Coast is the most searched destination on our site right now, and it earns that spot for families. The town is compact, the beaches are close, and the two UNESCO sites — Cape Coast Castle and Elmina Castle, about 20 minutes apart by road — are the kind of places older children remember for years. Both run guided tours that last roughly 45 minutes to an hour; the walk down to the slave dungeons is steep and confined, so judge whether your children are ready for it. Under-tens often do better outside on the courtyard walls with a second adult.
For a base, look along the coast road between Cape Coast town and Elmina, where mid-range guesthouses with pools sit within a short drive of both castles. Budget rooms in town start low; family rooms at coastal guesthouses sit in the mid-range band. I would book a place with a pool in that stretch rather than a town-centre hotel — after a hot morning at the castle, the pool is what saves the afternoon. Cape Coast's dry season, roughly November to March, is the easiest window with young children.
Accra: museums, markets and easy logistics
Accra is where most trips begin, because Kotoka International Airport sits in the city. Families with a day or two should not try to see everything: pick the National Museum on Barnes Road, then the Arts Centre on the seafront for crafts, and let the children run at the beach clubs along the Labadi road east of the city centre. Labone and Osu are comfortable bases with restaurants within walking distance; East Legon and Airport Residential Area are quieter and better for families with a car, at higher room rates.
Traffic is the real planning constraint. Allow 40 minutes for what looks like 15 on the map, and avoid crossing the city in the late afternoon. The Makola Market is exhilarating but hard work with small children — go early, go with one adult per child, and leave before lunch. I would skip the beach at Labadi on weekends and take the 45-minute drive west to Bojo Beach instead, where a boat crosses to a sandbar and the water is calmer.
Waterfalls and hills in the Volta Region
The Volta Region rewards families who want greenery after the coast. Wli Falls, near the Togo border, is the tallest in Ghana and the walk from the visitor centre is flat and manageable for children of primary-school age — about 45 minutes at a slow pace. The lower falls can be reached almost immediately, which matters if you have a toddler. Ho is the natural overnight stop, roughly three hours by road from Accra on a good day.
Further south, Tafi Atome's monkey sanctuary is a short guided walk where Mona monkeys come close; children love it, and it takes under an hour. Combine Wli and Tafi Atome over two nights based in Ho rather than attempting them as a day trip from Accra. Lodges near the falls are simple and mid-range; Ho has the wider choice of rooms. The greenest months are May to October, but expect afternoon rain — pack light raincoats for everyone rather than umbrellas.
What to book, and what to leave out
A sensible family shape is Accra for two nights, Cape Coast for three, and the Volta Region for two, all by road with a hired driver rather than self-drive — roads are good on the main arteries but tiring to navigate. Kakum National Park's canopy walkway, about an hour north of Cape Coast, is excellent for children over about eight who are steady on their feet; the walkway is narrow and sways, and the height is genuine. Book Kakum early in the morning to avoid heat and queues.
Skip Mole National Park on a first family trip unless you have four spare days — the drive from Accra is long and the roads beyond Tamale are slow. Skip the long coastal drives after dark. When you book, choose Cape Coast properties with a pool and air-conditioning clearly listed, and confirm the room sleeps your whole family rather than assuming. Book two to three months ahead for December and Easter, when coastal guesthouses fill quickly.
Questions, answered
How many days do families need in Cape Coast?
Two full days cover Cape Coast Castle, Elmina Castle and a beach afternoon, with a third for Kakum. Three nights based between the two towns is comfortable and avoids long drives with children.
Is the Cape Coast Castle tour suitable for young children?
The guided tours are short but include steep, confined passages into the dungeons. Older children usually manage; under-tens often do better waiting on the courtyard with a second adult. Decide as a family before you go in.
When is the best time to visit Ghana with children?
November to March is driest, easiest for Cape Coast beaches and Accra. The Volta Region is greenest from May to October with afternoon rain. December and Easter are the busiest, so book hotels two to three months ahead.
