Georgia in March: Weather, Blossom and Quiet Roads
March in Georgia means almond blossom in Tbilisi's old courtyards, empty mountain roads and hotel rates well below May levels — here is how to plan around the weather.
What March Weather Actually Feels Like
Think of March in Georgia as two countries in one month. Tbilisi and the Kakheti wine towns sit at roughly 450 to 550 metres and warm quickly: daytime highs climb from around 10°C in early March to 16–18°C by the end, with the almond and apricot trees in the old courtyards of Sololaki and the Mtatsminda slopes flowering from mid-month. Rain is frequent but short. Batumi on the Black Sea is milder and wetter, and the coast promenade is almost deserted, which is either the attraction or the drawback depending on your taste.
The mountains are a different story. Gudauri, at 2,200 metres on the Georgian Military Highway about two hours' drive from Tbilisi, still has reliable snow through late March, and Kazbegi (Stepantsminda) stays cold and often cloudy. Svaneti's villages are quiet and many guesthouses only reopen in late April. So a March trip works best as a lowland loop — Tbilisi, Mtskheta, Kakheti — with an optional snow day in Gudauri, rather than a full mountain itinerary.
Where to Base Yourself, and What to Book
Tbilisi rewards a central base. Vake and Vera suit travellers who want cafés and quiet; the old town around Erekle II Street puts you within walking distance of the sulphur baths and the Narikala cable car but can be noisy at night. Budget guesthouses in the old town and around Marjanishvili typically run well under what you would pay in May, and mid-range boutique hotels in Sololaki offer the best value this month — I would book one of those rather than a chain near Rustaveli Avenue, where March prices have not dropped as far.
For Kakheti, Signagi makes a pleasant one-night stop, but Telavi is the better hub for wineries around Tsinandali and Napareuli, roughly two hours from Tbilisi by car. Note that many Kakheti wineries keep winter hours until late March, so confirm openings before you drive. For skiing, Gudauri hotels are at their cheapest in the last week of March even though the snow is still good; book there rather than in Kazbegi if downhill skiing is the point.
Roads, Transport and Timing
March is when the Georgian Military Highway can be closed by avalanche risk or landslide between Gudauri and Kazbegi, sometimes for a day or two. Check the road status before setting out and keep a flexible day in Tbilisi as a buffer. The Tbilisi–Mtskheta run is easy at about 30 minutes by marshal route taxi or 20 minutes by car, and Mtskheta's Svetitskhoveli Cathedral and Jvari Monastery are far calmer now than in summer.
Domestic flights to Batumi and Kutaisi are cheap in March, but the trains are more reliable in wet weather. Within Tbilisi, the metro covers most of what a visitor needs, and Bolt rides across the centre rarely take more than fifteen minutes. If you plan to rent a car for Kakheti, choose something with decent ground clearance: unpaved access lanes to vineyards turn to mud after rain, and many are not lit at night.
What to Skip, and What March Does Best
Skip Batumi's beach and the Adjaran mountain villages this month — the coast is wind-whipped and many seasonal restaurants are shut. Skip Svaneti unless you are equipped for winter conditions and have confirmed an open guesthouse. Also skip the big-group day tours to Kazbegi, which often run anyway and end up turning back at Gudauri; a private driver gives you the option to change plans.
What March does best is cities without crowds. Tbilisi's National Gallery, the Dry Bridge flea market and the cafes of Abanotubani are enjoyable at a stroll rather than a shuffle. The first warm weekends bring families back to Rike Park and the botanical garden. Hotel availability is wide and rates are near their annual low, which makes this the month to book a slightly better room than you would in spring high season.
Questions, answered
Is March a good time to visit Georgia?
Yes, for Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kakheti. Days reach 10–18°C, blossom appears mid-month and hotels are quiet and inexpensive. Mountain regions remain cold and some roads close, so keep the itinerary lowland-focused.
Do I need snow chains in Georgia in March?
Only if you drive to Gudauri or over high passes. The Georgian Military Highway to Kazbegi can close for avalanche control. For Tbilisi, Mtskheta and Kakheti, ordinary tyres are fine, though expect muddy vineyard lanes after rain.
Should I book a hotel in advance in March?
Availability is wide, but book a week or two ahead for Tbilisi's Sololaki and Vera districts and for Gudauri at weekends, when domestic skiers arrive. Kakheti guesthouses in Telavi are worth confirming directly, as some reopen only in late March.
