Getting to Dubrovnik's Old Town: Buses, Parking and Cruise Crowds

Arriving by bus, car or cruise ship each brings its own timing and cost; here's how to handle the Old Town without the scramble.

By bus from Gruž, Lapad and beyond

Libertas buses run frequently from the main bus station at Gruž and from Lapad to the Old Town. From Gruž, take line 1A or 1B to Pile, the gateway square just outside the western wall; the ride takes about 10 minutes and a ticket bought at a kiosk costs less than from the driver. From Lapad, lines 2A, 2B and 4 connect to Pile in 15–20 minutes. If you are staying in the Old Town itself or near Ploče, get off at Pile and walk east through the gate. Buses run roughly every 10–15 minutes during the day, less often in the evening.

For the eastern side, lines 5 and 6 go to Ploče, which is handy if your hotel is near Banje Beach or the Ploče gate. Tickets are sold at kiosks and at the driver; validate on board. A day pass is not always worth it if you plan to walk most of the day, but a three-day pass pays off if you are commuting between Lapad and the Old Town. Avoid the bus at cruise-ship peak times if you can, as they fill quickly.

Parking outside the walls

You cannot drive into the Old Town. The main public car park is at Ilijina Glavica, a 10-minute uphill walk from Pile, with hourly rates that add up quickly; there is also a large garage at Gruž near the ferry port and bus station, which is cheaper for long stays and better connected. If you are staying in Lapad or Babin Kuk, your hotel likely has parking, and you can leave the car there and take the bus. Street parking near the Old Town is metered and scarce, so do not count on finding a space.

For day trips to Cavtat or the Pelješac peninsula, a car is useful, but for the Old Town itself it is a liability. If you are only staying in Dubrovnik for a couple of days, skip the car entirely. If you drive, book accommodation with parking included—many hotels in Lapad and Gruž offer it—and factor in the cost of garage parking if your hotel does not. The Gruž garage is a good fallback, with a flat daily rate that is often cheaper than the Ilijina Glavica hourly rate for a full day.

Cruise-ship arrivals and when to avoid the crush

Cruise ships anchor at Gruž port and tender passengers to the Old Town, usually between 8am and 4pm. The busiest months are July and August, when two or three ships can be in port at once. The Old Town becomes very crowded from about 10am to 2pm, especially on the Stradun and around the Pile gate. If you are staying in the Old Town, plan sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon. If you are arriving by bus, avoid the 9–11am window when cruise groups are heading in.

Check the port schedule for your dates—it is published online and shows ship arrival and departure times. On days with fewer ships, the Old Town is noticeably calmer. For a quieter experience, visit the city walls right at opening time or after 5pm; see our guide to walking the walls for entrances and timing: https://staycroatia.rent/blog/walls-of-dubrovnik-visiting-guide/. If you are staying overnight, you get the early morning and evening without the day-trippers, which is why I would book a hotel inside the walls or in Ploče for at least one night.

Where to stay for easy arrival

If you arrive by bus, staying near Pile or in the Old Town minimises walking with luggage. Pile has several small hotels and guesthouses, but the Old Town itself has more character. Ploče, just east of the Old Town, is quieter and has some upscale hotels with parking, though it is a 10-minute walk to the Stradun. Lapad is a good compromise: hotels there often have parking, and buses to Pile are frequent. Gruž is convenient for the ferry and bus station but less charming for a holiday.

For a first visit, I would book a hotel in the Old Town for one or two nights to experience the city without crowds, then move to Lapad or Babin Kuk for a relaxed stay with parking and a pool. Avoid hotels along the main road in Gruž if you are sensitive to traffic noise. If you are arriving by cruise ship for the day, you will not need a hotel, but if you are extending your stay, book early—the best places fill up months in advance for July and August.
