Day Trip to the Elafiti Islands from Gruž Port
How to reach Lopud, Šipan and Koločep from Dubrovnik's main ferry terminal, and which island deserves your day.
Getting out of Gruž: the practical start
Gruž is Dubrovnik's working harbour, about 3 km northwest of the Old Town and roughly 10 minutes by local bus from Pile gate. Jadrolinija's catamaran and the smaller local boats leave from the terminal on Obala pape Ivana Pavla II, with ticket desks in the main building. In July and August, boats to Koločep and Lopud fill early, so buy the previous afternoon where possible. Crossings are short: Koločep around 30 minutes, Lopud 45 to 55, Šipan closer to 75 depending on whether the boat stops at Sudurad first.
Parking near the port costs money by the day and fills up in high season, so a taxi or the bus from Lapad and Babin Kuk is simpler than driving. If you are staying in the Old Town, allow 25 minutes door to gangway. Bring cash for small harbour cafes, a refillable bottle, and shoes with grip, because the stone paths on all three islands are polished smooth. The morning departures are the ones to take; the afternoon returns bunch up between 17:00 and 19:00.
Lopud: the beach day
Lopud is the one most people mean when they say Elafiti. The car-free village sits in a shallow bay, and from the pier it is a flat 15-minute walk across the isthmus to Šunj, a sandy crescent on the open side of the island. Šunj has two low-key beach bars, sunbed hire, and shallow water that stays warm into October. The walk back is easy, or a golf-cart taxi does the run for a few euros. The 15th-century Franciscan monastery and the ruined Sutvrač fortress above the village reward a slower hour.
Book Lopud if you want swimming over sightseeing. Avoid it on weekends in August, when day boats from Gruž and excursions from the cruise ships make Šunj crowded by 11:00. Go on a weekday, arrive on the first boat, and you will have the beach largely to yourself until lunch. September is the sweet spot: sea temperature still around 24°C, fewer people, and the ferries running a full timetable until the end of the month.
Šipan and Koločep: quieter alternatives
Šipan is the largest of the Elafiti and the least visited, with two harbours, Sudurad and Šipanska Luka, connected by a lane through vineyards and olive groves. It suits walkers: the path between the harbours takes about 40 minutes at an easy pace, passing stone chapels and a couple of konoba where grilled fish and local wine are the order of the day. There is no sandy beach to speak of, but swimming off the rocks near Sudurad is clear and quiet. This is the island I would book for a peaceful half-day.
Koločep, the closest to Dubrovnik, is small enough to cross on foot in an hour. Two villages, Gornje Čelo and Donje Čelo, sit on either side of a pine-covered ridge, with a pebbly beach and a handful of restaurants at each. It works well as a short escape when you have a flight or a dinner reservation later in the day. Skip Koločep if you have only one free day: Lopud gives you more to do for the same effort, and Šipan gives you more solitude.
Where to base yourself
Staying in Gruž itself puts you five minutes from the ferry and a short bus ride from the Old Town, at prices generally below the walled city. Lapad and Babin Kuk, a 15-minute walk around the bay, offer more hotels, a promenade and the pebbly Lapad beach, which is a reasonable substitute for an island day if the weather turns. The Old Town is the most atmospheric base but the noisiest and priciest in July and August, and you will still travel to Gruž for the boat.
For a trip built around island days, I would book somewhere in Gruž or Lapad rather than the Old Town: you save on the room, you walk to the 08:00 catamaran, and you are back in the afternoon without a bus transfer. May, June, September and early October give the best balance of swimmable water, open ferries and manageable crowds. Check the Jadrolinija timetable the day before travel, because shoulder-season services are reduced.
Questions, answered
How long does the ferry take from Gruž to Lopud?
Roughly 45 to 55 minutes on the Jadrolinija catamaran, depending on stops at Koločep. Koločep is about 30 minutes, and Šipan around 75 minutes when the boat calls at both Sudurad and Šipanska Luka.
Do I need to book ferry tickets in advance?
Not usually, but in July and August buy the previous day at the Gruž terminal, as morning sailings to Lopud fill up. Outside high season, turning up 20 minutes before departure is normally fine.
Which Elafiti island is best for a family beach day?
Lopud, for the sandy Šunj beach and its shallow water. The walk from the pier takes about 15 minutes and is flat, and a golf-cart taxi runs the route for those carrying bags or small children.
