Walking the Sea Point Promenade: What to Expect at Each End
A practical guide to Cape Town's seaside walk, from the Mouille Point lighthouse to the Bantry Bay rocks, with distances, timings and honest advice.
Mouille Point to the Sea Point swimming pool
Start at the Mouille Point lighthouse, a white-and-red landmark near the corner of Beach Road and Bay Road. The paved promenade runs north-east along the Atlantic, with the Green Point Urban Park and Cape Town Stadium behind you. This first kilometre is wide, flat and busy with joggers, dog walkers and families. The morning sun is behind you, so the water glitters and Table Mountain looms ahead. Allow 15 to 20 minutes to reach the Sea Point swimming pool, a heated outdoor lido that is open year-round (entry fees apply; check seasonal hours).
Between the lighthouse and the pool, you pass the Mouille Point restaurants and the Cape Royal Hotel, but the real draw is the view back towards Robben Island. On clear days, the island sits low on the horizon. The promenade here is wheelchair-friendly and has benches every hundred metres or so. If you are staying in Green Point or Mouille Point, this is your morning walk; hotels in these suburbs are a five-minute stroll from the start. Expect cool breezes even in summer (December to February), when temperatures average 20–26°C.
Sea Point pool to Three Anchor Bay
From the pool, the promenade curves around Sea Point's main beach, a rocky stretch with tidal pools at low tide. The path continues past the Sea Point Pavilion and the famous open-air gym equipment stations, where locals work out with the Atlantic as a backdrop. This section is about 700 metres and takes 10 minutes at a stroll. You will find public toilets near the pool and at the Three Anchor Bay parking area. The promenade is well lit at night, but I would not walk it alone after dark; take a taxi or ride-share instead.
Three Anchor Bay is a small cove with a beach and a launch spot for kayakers. The bay marks roughly the halfway point of the promenade, and it is a good place to turn back if you are short on time. The Sea Point main road (Main Road) runs parallel, with frequent buses and minibus taxis. If you are booking a hotel, Sea Point itself has the widest choice, from budget guesthouses to the art-deco style hotels on the seafront. The walk from the pool to Three Anchor Bay is flat and suitable for prams.
Three Anchor Bay to Bantry Bay
Beyond Three Anchor Bay, the promenade narrows and becomes rockier, hugging the cliffs towards Bantry Bay. This 1.5-kilometre stretch takes about 25 minutes and is the most dramatic part of the walk. The path is still paved but has some uneven sections and no handrails in places. You will pass the Sea Point Signal School and the remains of the old fortified gun battery. The waves crash loudly here, especially at high tide, and spray can reach the path on windy days. Wear shoes with grip and hold children's hands.
Bantry Bay is a wealthy residential area with no beach to speak of, just rocks and a small tidal pool. The promenade ends at the boundary of Clifton, but you can continue on the road to Clifton's four beaches (about 20 minutes further). Bantry Bay has few hotels, mostly serviced apartments and guesthouses with sea views. I would not book here without a car, as the walk to Sea Point's restaurants takes 30 minutes. The best months for this section are March to May, when the summer wind (the south-easter) dies down and the sea is calm.
Practical tips and where to stay
The full promenade from Mouille Point to Bantry Bay is about 4.5 kilometres and takes 1.5 to 2 hours at a relaxed pace. There is no shade, so bring a hat and sunscreen even on cloudy days. Public toilets are at the Sea Point pool, Three Anchor Bay and Bantry Bay, but they are not always well maintained. Drinking water fountains are scarce; carry your own. The promenade is free and open 24 hours, but I recommend walking between 7am and 6pm. Sunrise and sunset are spectacular, but the wind can be fierce.
For accommodation, I would book in Sea Point or Green Point. Sea Point has the most hotel options and the best access to the promenade's middle section. Green Point is quieter and closer to the stadium and urban park. Mouille Point is ideal for early-morning walks but has fewer restaurants. Avoid booking in Bantry Bay unless you have a car. During December and January, Sea Point hotels fill up fast, so reserve two to three months ahead. For a quieter stay, consider March or April, when the weather is still warm but the crowds thin out.
