Kanchanaburi in October: River Levels, Routes and Where to Stay

October is when the Kwai settles after the monsoon, the falls start flowing again and rates in Kanchanaburi drop well below the December peak.

What the river is doing in October

The monsoon in Kanchanaburi usually breaks in the second half of October, but the Khwae Yai and Khwae Noi stay high for the first week or two, fed by the Sri Nakharin and Vajiralongkorn dams upstream. That means the Maenam Khwae floating restaurants at the pier in Mueang district are open and busy, while the famous log-raft rooms and the low-slung guesthouses along the Song Khwae road may only reopen late in the month. Ask your hotel directly whether its riverside deck is above the waterline before you book; many places only answer honestly.

River levels matter most at Erawan Falls and Sai Yok Noi. Erawan, 65 kilometres west of town on Route 3199, has its seven tiers at their fullest in October, and the on-site national park bungalows are the only way to be at the lower pools before the day-trippers arrive from Bangkok. At Sai Yok Noi the waterfall beside the Burma Railway memorial tends to be a trickle until late in the month. If the water alone is your reason for coming, book the last ten days of October.

Getting there and getting around

From Bangkok, the cheapest option is the ordinary train from Thonburi station (Bangkok Noi), which leaves twice daily, takes about three hours and rolls across the River Kwai bridge before stopping at Kanchanaburi town. The bus from Mo Chit's northern terminal runs every 30 to 45 minutes and takes roughly two and a half to three hours depending on traffic on Route 4. Driving yourself is faster: about two hours 20 minutes from central Bangkok via Nakhon Pathom. Fares change, so check at the station rather than trusting any figure quoted online.

In town, songthaews and motorcycle taxis handle the short hops between the bridge, the war cemetery on Saeng Chuto road and the night market. For Erawan, Sai Yok and the Hellfire Pass museum near Thong Pha Phum, arrange a car and driver through your hotel or join a shared minivan — public buses along Route 3199 are infrequent and fill up. Renting a scooter is fine for the flat run to Prasat Mueang Sing, 15 kilometres west of town, but not for the mountain road to Erawan in the wet. Rent rain gear, not umbrellas.

Rain, crowds and what October costs you

October is a shoulder month, which in practice means two benefits: the Decembrist crowds of Bangkok weekenders have not yet arrived, and riverside hotels in Mueang district have rooms free at short notice. Expect afternoon downpours rather than all-day rain, typically heavy for an hour. Mornings are usually clear, so schedule Erawan, the bridge and the war cemetery early, and keep the afternoon for the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre museum, which is air-conditioned and one of the best museums in the country.

The trade-off is that some river activities pause for the high water. Long-tail boat trips under the bridge may be suspended for safety, and tubing on the Khwae Noi is usually over by October. Camping at Erawan can be damp. Dining options in the low season are thinner — a few riverside restaurants close in September and reopen in November. If you want guaranteed floating-market style boats and full activity menus, come in December or January; if you want space, lower rates and green forest, October wins.

Where I would book, and what to skip

For a first visit, I would stay in Mueang district within walking distance of the bridge and the night market, in a mid-range riverside hotel rather than a guesthouse on the Song Khwae strip, so you are not at the mercy of a flooded deck. Rates in October generally sit below the December peak and above the September low. Families wanting the falls should look at the national park bungalows at Erawan itself or the resorts around Sai Yok, both of which need a car.

Skip the day-trip dash from Bangkok if you can. A single day on the road gives you the bridge, a buffet lunch and four hours of bus. Two nights lets you do Erawan in the morning, the museums in the afternoon and the bridge at sunrise without the crowds. Book your Bangkok hotel for the start and end of the trip and a Kanchanaburi room for the middle — the Thonburi train is the most memorable way in, and the most comfortable way back is an air-conditioned bus from the town terminal.

Questions, answered

Is October a good month to visit Kanchanaburi?

Yes, if you go late in the month. The rain eases after mid-October, Erawan Falls is at full flow, and riverside hotels in Mueang district have rooms available before the December high season. Expect short, heavy afternoon showers.

Should I stay by the river in Kanchanaburi town or near Erawan?

Stay in town for your first visit, close to the bridge and night market, where restaurants and transport are easy. Choose Erawan or Sai Yok only if waterfalls and national park walks are the main purpose, since you will need your own vehicle.

How do I get from Bangkok to Kanchanaburi?

The ordinary train from Thonburi station takes about three hours and crosses the River Kwai bridge. Buses from Mo Chit run frequently and take two and a half to three hours. By car it is roughly two hours 20 minutes via Nakhon Pathom.
