Wolf Road, the Airport and Colonie: for drivers and short layovers

If you are arriving at Albany International Airport or driving in on Interstate 87 or the Northway, the Wolf Road strip in Colonie is where the bulk of the region's hotel rooms sit — Marriott, Hilton and Choice properties line the road between Route 5 and Sand Creek Road. It is eight minutes to the terminal, fifteen to downtown Albany without traffic, and twenty-five to Saratoga Springs in good conditions. Free parking is standard, which downtown hotels rarely offer, and there are enough chain restaurants to feed a family without a reservation.

What you give up is any sense of place: Wolf Road is a commercial strip and you will drive everywhere. Best months for this base are May through October, when you can add a day trip to Saratoga, the Crossings of Colonie park, or the Pine Bush Preserve.
